Obviously buying an amd 64 today is highly recommened for most gamers that want an affordable cpu. Tho its great overall, mobo's for it today dont have dual channel memory. Do to because of the dimm/mem controller intergrated into the chip. Later this year amd has made it official to release a 939-pin socket, which means new processor. The article i read also states that the point of these 939 pins is for the dual memory. The question is, will i really need that dual memory now, and a year or 2 from now? is it ok having single dual memory???

I think you also need to have ECC registered ram for current AMD64 boards.

Only if you use an Athlon FX CPU (which are dual-channel).

To the original poster, that post was very difficult to comprehend, but you have some facts wrong. I'm taking you're talking of the socket 940 Athlon FX chip, which in fact does support dual channel.

The socket 754 Athlon64 does not support dual channel. When the updated Newcastle core comes out in summer, the Athlon64 will be dual channel capable.

i read about newcastle supporting dual memory, but the cache is going to be 512 compared to the the 754 sockets which is 1mb.

The extra 512MB cache isn't helping the Hammer core out that much and AMD is going to cut the size in an attempt to sell the processors cheaper. The L2 cache makes up a majority of the die size. Thats why i thought it was pretty ignorant to ever think the 3000+ was a Newcastle core just because it had half the L2 cache. If it was truly fabricated with half the L2 cache then the die size would of been smaller on the 3000+ then the 3200+ but in reality they are the same size. AMD takes 3200+'s that have non-working L2 caches and by disabling half of it alot of the time they can get the processor working. They then market it as a cheaper 3000+. AMD saves themselves from scraping a bunch of defective 3200+'s and make a profit.

Wrong, mate. Athlon64s don't, whereas Opteron and FX do. Basically Sledgehammer does and Clawhammer does not.

To thread poster, what is your original langauge?
