i was planning on saving up for a whole computer but i wanted to play some games on high settings so i bought a 5970

problem is that i have a x2 2.45ghz with 4gb of ram.

will a 5970 be useless with a old cpu?

i want to play games at a min 1600x900 high settings.

my system right now b4 i recive my 5970

amd x2 2.45ghz
4gb hyperx kingston
2x 74gb raptor
7950x2 (2 of these)
600watt psu

i was planning on getting the 6core intel. or wait for the 975 to be alot cheaper whent he 6 core come out

Yeah, the Athlon will bottleneck your powerful GPU. Either get a Phenom II 965 or a Core i7. Don't bother with the Extreme CPU's, they are a waste of money and you could get either a 920 or a 950 and overclock it.

Will definitely hold you back, but it's not like you can't do anything with it. Just not be able to reach it's full potential. :p

Yeah, it will heavily bottleneck it. But you'll be able to rest easy knowing you can push max setting, 16xAF and 32xAA and still not bog it down. :p (At least on that processor... Good thing about that 5970 is that you can carry that GPU over to your new computer once you build it up.)

anyone know when the 6core i7 might come out?

i was gonna bite the bullet and get a 920 but i didnt want to shorten a cpu life.

man i remember when the amd 64 and x2 was the king in gaming.

I think my x2 bottlenecked my 8800GTX now that I have my quad. It would definitely bottleneck that 5970.

Or the x2 was really just that much slower than the 955. Certainly a possibility. :)

i guess ill just wait for a big sale next week to get a 920 for the next few years.

just hope the 920 and 5970 doesnt go outdated in a year.

is the 920 easy to overclock to 3.0ghz on air? i dont want to touch the voltage.

right now im running a 939skt 4400x2

is there a phenom cpu for 939 to hold me until late this year?

i just serched the net and they say its suppose to come out this year for the 6 core intel.

Ah I figured as much. You need a new socket and therefore a new platform. I would totally go for an i7. I myself would go for an i5 but if i7 is what you want and have money for then that's hella good.

they come out in june i believe.. for a cool 1000 dollars a piece.. :p

phenom II 955 @ 3.6ghz/3.8ghz will be more then enough to power that thing.. if you really want an i7 that badly.. get the 920.. the 6 core i7's are a complete waste of money with the way games are going with multi-threading.. and they wont be getting any better for a long ass time if they continue to keep going the route of console ports.. the i7 860(lga-1156 and i7 920(lga-1366) are easily the best bang for the buck in that performance category.. even though there wont be shit for a difference between them and the phenom II 955 with games..

even if there was a phenom II processor for the 939 socket.. the 939 socket alone would bottleneck that card since 939 is limited to 1.6ghz HT which is a huge requirement for gaming on AMD systems that dont have L3 cache..

man my 6400 x2 BE was bottlenecking my 4870.

Imagine what a 5870 or 5970 would be like.

Ha, not sure why this is in the Intel forum, LOL. But you'd see a pretty big bottleneck with that cpu.

The 939 dual cores had a 2.0ghz HT, but yeah, still a bottleneck. Also, no, there were no Phenom's or Phenom 2 for 939. The 939 dies with the FX-62 aka Opty 185. I had an opty and it was holding my 8800GT back, but still a damn fine CPU. OC'd very nice.

On a good note, you should be able to get a pretty good price for your CPU on ebay :D People still look for those old socket 939 ones.

Even if he had an AM2, it may not be able to run a Phenom. I've got a friend with that problem.
