Hello,

I just switched from a AMD 64 3000+ to an AMD X2 4400+ everything worked fine but I think windows did not recognize the 2nd core / cpu. After I switched the CPUs I did not reinstall windows, once I boot up windows it did not install any drivers or found any new hardware.

Anyone know how to make the 2nd core / cpu avaible without reinstalling windows?
Considering there are many people having problems with dual core and gaming I dont know if should do it at all but I want to know if it is possible.

Also the performance boost is rather dissapointing, especally with 3dmarks (same result..).

Thanks if you can help me. Reinstalling windows is not an option at all, sorry.

PS:
Windows 2000 prof.
Asus A8V Deluxe mainboard

The "many people having problems with dual core and gaming" is bullshit, bluntly.

Have you ever flashed your bios? You're probably running on an old bios.

3d mark as anything other than a generalized indicator is a joke. There are people who do nothing but 'play' 3d mark all day long...by that I mean people sit around and endlessly tweak their systems in ways that do nothing but enhance 3dmark performance to show off their e-penis. Dont think people are above cheating in various ways to make this happen either.

The key here is that you be happy with the performance you get out of your system with the things that you do. I cant imagine going back to a single core anymore. My computing experience with 2 is just butter smooth. You'll find that to be the general consensus of people here and elsewhere. Of course games wont use the extra core unless they are multithreaded, but its worth having the other around for everything else you do with your computer, and more games are going multi all the time.

If the Microsoft link above doesn't work, then do the following...

Just do a repair installation if you have to. You won't loose anything and the system will reinstall all the necessary drivers.

If you go this route, Press F5 when the computer says "Press F6 to install third party scsi drivers", then select Multiprocessor PC and continue with the repair installation. Dual core kernel will be installed.

Don't do a "repair" with the recovery console, you want the second repair option after that.

Another questions:

what do I choose for ACPI

ACPI-MultiProc, ACPI-UniProc, MPS UniProc or MPS MultiProc?

If windows recognizes the 2nd core, does the cpu use more wattage? will the cpu temperature go up aswell? (currently 38-43C).

I upgraded to the latest BIOS before isntalling the new CPU.

thanks for the link, I will try it when I get home.

@Tutelary, if you read the thread:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=983781

you will notice that several ppl have problems with dual core and gaming

and in those kinds of threads theres always someone complaining about X game when another person has no problem. I call user error. At MOST you have to set affinity. whoopie.

Most people who use Dual Core chips experience no problems. Dual core chips are the future, and very soon the only chips which won’t be dual core are going to be the Celeron/sempron types. For the few mostly older games which sometimes have a problem, installing the AMD fix should solve that.

Also the performance boost is rather dissapointing, especally with 3dmarks (same result..).

The 4400+ doesn’t have a lot of clock speed advantage over the 3000+, especially when you ignore the entire 2nd core, which is hands down the only reason to be getting an X2.

Maybe you should just upgrade to XP and kill two birds with one stone ;)

well if I set affinity I use one core, just like now. no reason to enable dual core if games can be run on only one core anyway?

...if you have a problem with a game you simply set affinity. Unless the game is multithreaded you arent going to be benefiting from having that extra core sitting there regardless of it causing problems or not, its simply not running the game. Perhaps you're confused on how this whole thing works?

yeah maybe, anway.

I activated multiproc ACPI and the 2nd core was recognized. I see both CPUs now in task manager.

3dmark05 results:

AMD 64 3000+
3DMark Score 4870 3DMarks
CPU Score 3473 CPUMarks

AMD x2 4400+ (single core)
3DMark Score 4858 3DMarks
CPU Score 4085 CPUMarks

AMD x2 4400+ (dual core)
3DMark Score 4897 3DMarks
CPU Score 5171 CPUMarks

while the overall benchmark score is rather disappointing, the CPUMarks show that it isnt that bad at all.
I wish I did some prober CPU Benchmarking before upgrading, oh well.
Online comparing shows aswell that the CPU score is about right.

Didnt test any games yet expect eve online wich crashed onces, just thought Id share some informations.

No problems so far with prey and condamned but I noticed that the avg. temp of the CPU has gone up from 42C to 48-50C Im using no watercooling, that temp is ok?

This used to be true, but now both Nvidia and ATI have made dual-core/multi-processor enhancements to their video drivers, which helps to increase gaming performance regardless of the game being multi-threaded.
