I'm trying to install a brand new AMD X2 5200+ (Socket AM2) into a veteran Asus M2N-SLI motherboard. I'm getting beep codes: one long, two short, repeating.

I know the motherboard is good - it works with the owner's old 4200+. We put the old chip back when the 5200+ didn't work and it worked as normal.

I don't know if the new chip is DOA or not - I couldn't test it on another AM2 board because neither I nor the owner has one.

The chip has "new 65W design" emblazoned on the front.

Is this an incompatibility between products, something that can be fixed with a BIOS update or simply a DOA processor?

put in his old chip, set the memory to a lower clock speed, among other anti overclockish things, and try changing the ht multiplier and such... i had a laptop give me the same code for some ram not liking a change i made to the processor settings :p just incase ;) doubt its the same at all but meh :p just trying...

Failing that, BIOS update should get it fixed. im fairly sure the processor is good, as my AMD systems dont make the same type of beep without a processor. its one long, big gap, one long, repeating :p

This didn't work.

I've tried to find descriptions of the beep codes for this motherboard. The manual has nothing. The motherboard uses an AWARD BIOS, there's no standard for those. So far, I have not been able to find out what the beep code means.

find the manual, either a physical copy or online, it will have a list of beep codes and it'll say what each one means. from there, fix the problem the beep is calling for. it's possible that the board just needs a bios update to recognize the new cpu. a DOA cpu is exceptionally uncommon. ;)
