So, I've been using this socket 939 X2 4400+ stock since I owned it and never looked into overclocking it. I'll be ordering a new X6 system soon thanks to help here (likely - no OCing that as well) and so this 4400+ sys will be avail for other things.

Just very curious now that I've revisited this site, but can someone suggest some SAFE OC settings I can try for the 4400+ , any settings that will likely work, be stable, and boost a bit (cooled by stock HSF btw, decent airflow in case, but that's about it. Not interested in spending $ to cool more or "push it to the limit" really).

I used to OC back in the days (mainly intels)...but admit I'm totally clueless on what settings for this kind of OC. Searched here to find a lot of non 939 socket OC info, and it seems very few have the 4400+ (must not be a good OC'r for stock HSF, etc.).

It has:
Amd X2 4400+ (running stock @ 2210mhz)
Gigayte K8NS Ultra-939 mobo
4gig (4 sticks filling all slots) Gskill DDR2 PC3200 (running stock @ 200mhz)

Just curious about some of the more "safe" settings to try for the fun of it.
What do you think it would definitely hit with stock setup here?

do some googling for reviews on the processor and see if they have any overclocking numbers for it.. not sure how high it will overclock but will most likely overclock to the same speeds as the 4800+..

also you say you have 4 gigs of ddr2 pc3200.. is that correct? or is it ddr1 pc-3200? because if its ddr2 400 then you cant overclock at all because you cant lower the ram multiplier enough..

I'll try some more searches, but really I'm not seeing any info that relates to my mobo/cpu setup really. Fair amount of info of water-cooled OCs, not so much for the stock HSF settings I can try. I admit I'm confused with the bios settings and which settings apply to this cpu and ocing. Just curiosity getting the better of me (I'd like to try it though).

btw: my (speedfan) temps (stock) at idle are:
mobo reading: 25c
CPU reading: 37-38c Vcore: 1.36V

am I the only one that thinks you should sell it, and buy an AM2 setup for what you sell your 939 gear for ??? that chip (though the amazon link) shows at $698 (i dont think it actually will sell for this :p but you can probably get $100 or so for that chip alone....basically replace with an Athlon II X4 630 which is $96).....


as for overclocking, it would be the same as any other AMD overclock on a chip w/o an unlock, i believe there is a stickied thread in this sub forum that goes over AM2/AM2+ overclocking and addresses this(I skipped 939, so i'm not 100% sure its the same, but the OC method for my 754 was the same as for my AM2 chip)....


also, if i remember correctly, s939 was only with DDR(other than the ASRock board released with the 700 series chipset)
 
since ive only overclocked 1 939 processor ill have to do some research on the limitations of the socket and the 4400+.. so ill probably look up some info for you when i get back to my main computer.. i hate using this laptop for anything else except posting in forums and shit.. stupid 1280x800 resolution..
 
with four dimms or ram you wont be able to oc that much.

also is your mb a nforce 4 chipset?

with 2 dimms installed i used to run my 4400 at:
10 multy
250 fsb
4 htt link
ram set at 166 (with the fsb increase the ram will run at 208 mhz)
cpu volts up one or two clicks

with 4 dimms i think you will have to lower the ram to 133
the 939 doesnt oc well with 4 dimms installed (in fact the ram will default to 166 with 4 dimms installed)

Wow, you're kidding...how much for a new socket 939 X2 CPU?
i guess i could sell it for something. (so much easier to just pick it up and move it to the extra system room though :)

And so the Athlon II X4 630 will pop right in to the existing gigbyte (socket 939) mobo?
i never knew that. Or are you talking about grabbing a compat mobo for it?

No it's a "socket 939 nforce 3 250" chipset (sorry, i should have added that). Gigabyte GA-K8NS ultra-939
I had to be very deliberate back then in avoiding a nforce 4 chipset (because of my a/v hardware reqs, which are very picky...but, i do like them).
Yes on 4 sticks (1gb ea), (not going that route with the new sys though)

stock mhz now the ram is working at dual-channell (400mhz) all 4 sticks.
PC3200, all sticks the same brand/speed btw

using aida32 (not sure why, but it's small and simple so I use it ) it says ram spd reads (for all 4 sticks):

so it wasnt running at 200mhz was it??

so drop the multiplier down to 10 (default is 11)
up the fsb to 250mhz (default is 200)
drop the htt down to 4 (default is 5)
drop the ram down to 133mhz (with the fsb at 250 it will run at about 172 ish)

see if it boots, if it doesnt bump the cpu volts up one
 
Oh, i see. Maybe the 200mhz at post is just a generic reading then?
Wouldn't it not be running dual channel then either though?

Thank you, I'll try out your suggested OC. Would you call this more of a safe overclock btw? (just interested in seeing what's what, but I don't want to burn anything out).
Is it a "noticeable" improvement in speed really 9something I might just keep set at if it works out, or is it not worth the wear-tear over in your opinion?)

i ran that oc on my 4400 for the life of the chip (still running like that in a friends pc!!)

it will still run dual channel but it has to do it at a lower speed.
every 939 is like that.

Set Mult to 10x

bumped vcore up 1 notch only to 1.375 (from 1.35).

Ram setting was odd..never could find/create 133/266 as you mentioned. maybe i'm not doing that right.
only had 1 option below the default (2 / 1.66 I think) which i could try so i set at that .
i think here's where the problem lies (looping boot at post). Should I change anything else to the ram settings?

What is the hammer fid setting about? related to problem that was on and I left it on "auto"

*also: in bios I also have a pci setting which is set ON to keep pci at 133mhz.

I thought that it being a locked chip, it was locked at 11?

I ran my 4200+ (same thing, same speed, just less cache) at 11 x 230 to give me 2.53 ghz.
I did the same overclock on my buddies 4400+ on his asus a8n mobo and he's still running it that way today.
I think we had to bump the voltage up a tad, but we never had to mess with any of the memory settings.

go higher on the vcore.. 1.37v isnt shit with those old 90nm processors.. they top out at 1.65v.. hell i had my athlon 64 3200+ clawhammer(130nm) running at 1.88v..

as far as the ram goes depending on the board/bios there should be an option for ram timing or ram config usually the option is in there..
 
put the ram as low as it goes and see if it will run stable

check cpuid if you get it to windows to see what speed it is running at (the ram)
