With all the hype around the 750 Ti and Maxwell rumors, Nvidia has been getting a lot of play recently.
So much so, I even forgot AMD existed for a while there. Maybe it's because the 290/290x were a massive disappointment from every standpoint except pricing. Or maybe it's because all of their prices doubled for the last 5 months.

Maybe AMD has terrible marketers. I don't know.
Are there any fresh rumors about Pirate Islands? Maybe at reasonable prices?

Shame to see AMD losing their footing in the gaming community.
 
You don't really get rumors (well anything of substance) this far out from releases. The reason Maxwell is getting discussion is because an iteration of it has already been released. Therefore there is much more concrete information to discuss and speculate on in regards to future releases (the higher end ones).

If you really want something to discuss then there is the possibility of next gen AMD cards bringing some sort of memory advance. Either GDDR6 or possibly HBM (http://www.skhynix.com/gl/products/graphics/graphics_info.jsp). Don't take this as gospel though, at this stage this is more idle speculation. If I had to speculate (just for fun) I'd say its quite possible AMD maintains a raw memory bandwidth advantage in the near future (although this kind hard too compare as well due to both staggering releases from each other).

Actually, if new GPUs are being released Q3-ish/early Q4, this is the perfect time for tidbits and hints to get leaked. Since the ASIC will be taped out and having silicon out there floating around generally means that someone will see or hear something.

I haven't heard about GDDR6 spec being finalized but AMD has been working closely on it and it has been speculated to be released late in 2014.

How, exactly, was the 290X a disappointment? The only thing I see as a negative is the operating temperatures with the reference cooler and maybe power draw. Beyond that the drivers have the usual issues that people expect from AMD's beta driver releases.

But name me one product (videocard) that Nvidia that allows me to play Battlefield 4 in Ultra setting at 2048*1152 on my Phenom II x4 960T

And you call this disappointing ?

I don't play Battlefield so I couldn't care less about what Mantle does for it.

Black screen crashes, throttling, AMD misleading the press with drivers.
The only good thing the 290X did was bring down Nvidia's prices. It fails at everything else AMD does well (or used to do well).

Even now you can probably buy a GTX 780 for $50-$100 less than the 290x, overclock it above and beyond anything the 290x is capable of.
I don't see the point of it, tbh. I can't really say the same thing about the 290 since it's much cheaper than the 780.

I'm an AMD fanboy but even I'm disappointed by their new cards. idk maybe you have to be a miner to appreciate them these days.
Here's hoping the future is brighter.

You are generalizing and from what you list here i have 0 problems with black screen crashing and throttling.

Mantle is the only reason why this card is so interesting.

The above is just not correct.I own a bunch of AMD 290 cards and last one I bought was March 28 2014 for 355 US.These are gaming cards which can do more than gaming.

I also own a bunch of 780Ti cards and in my machine I prefer AMD cards.They just run great with no problems.

Maxwell cards are not even out yet except one card 750Ti which a real gamer would never buy LOL.
I wish Nvidia will release better cards for the competition so we can all benefit.
Also AMD will be releasing new card within a few weeks and maybe it might be faster than 750TI in mining LOl.
 
The only winners between Nvidia vs AMD at this point are the investors. Riding AMD like a bull while slapping Nvidia's ass screaming, "Higher RAISE THE PRICE HIGHER!" Nobody is winning at the moment despite the advances.

290x is a really good card so i don't know what you could be disappointed about, except for the price of it, it should have retailed at 399 not 599
 
amd doesn't dictate to the manufacturers what cooling they have to use, so if some cards are overheating, blame the whatever manufacturer you bought your card from for installing crap cooling.... and the other problems you mentioned seem to be directly related to the overheating issue, fix one fix them all

So you buy a video card capable of running modern games on Ultra but pair it with a Phenom 2 cpu?

Perhaps if you had a proper cpu in the first place then you could play ALL games smoothly at high framerates...

How do you know he doesn't plan to upgrade later? Maybe he got the high end card as present for Christmas, or maybe he just plays BF4 and doesn't care about any other games.

Your post doesn't change anything, he asked the question to the OP specifically about BF4, not other games.

Everyone is planning to upgrade at some point aren't they??? Considering he is using a Phenom cpu does it really sound like someone that stays up to date? And if he got his card as a present than he likely asked for it as I doubt people just normally get a high end gpu for a present out of the blue.

So unless BF 4 is the only game he plays then it was silly to use a high end card with an outdated cpu.

And neither do you yet you keep replying to me about something I said to him. And where did I say what he said was wrong? I basically asked him why he had a high end gpu with an old cpu. Perhaps he can answer instead of you. ;)

Easy answer ya dingus :D because you will get significantly better gaming performance per $ spent on upgrading your GPU vs upgrading your CPU. And in the case of someone with a PII CPU he would likely need to buy a new Mobo as well. So he would likely get a significantly better improvement in framerates spending a few hundred $$ on a GPU vs spending 3x that money upgrading his who system
 
Better upgrade would be to go new Mobo/CPU combo. That card can't deliver on the power held back by your current situation.

Lol yeah sounds real smart. A Phenom 2 can barely average over 30-40 fps in some games so you would get the gaming performance of a mid range card anyway. :rolleyes:

Depends on how much usage I'm getting from the cpu. Apparently I can play all the games I want to play in those settings with this cpu. Without spending extra money, there is no need to buy something as a new cpu because you and others have them ?

I can make up my own mind on how to spend my money and no I don't want to play all games just a few ...
