AMD vs Intel?

I posted this in the general forum because it's really about both of the CPU's.
I often hear people say that AMD is better for gaming. What is the difference between an AMD and an Intel that have the same performance?
I know that AMDs require less Hz to get the same level of performance as Intels because they run at 12 clock cycles while Intels run at 20. Is it true that for this reason AMD gives it's CPU's names like 3000+ and 2600+ to correspond to their Intel counterparts, the P4 3GHz and 2.6 GHz respectively?
If so, what would be the difference between an Intel P4 2.4C and an AMD 2400+, for example? Or a 3.2E and a 3200+? Are AMDs generally cheaper? Or is there something more to it.. like an AMD will perform better in games than it's correspoding Intel counterpart?
I would really like a good answer to this question, so please, no fan-boy BS/spam from either side.

Oh my god, there's a search feature. I wonder why we can only search once every minute. It doesn't seem like many people use it.
 
Short answer:

AthlonXP < P4
P4 < Athlon64

Why? All about architecture. P4 was better than the XP while the 64 chip is better than the P4. Of course I am talking only of gaming here, as Intel's chips is very good at other things. And yes the rating system was developed by AMD to reflect the equivalency of their processor to the clock speed of Intel's. The XP chips, however, were not always up to par while the 64/FX processors are more than fast enough to beat Intel's counter chips. This is why we see a 2.6 64/FX beating out a 3.8 P4.
