AMD upgrade 2500 vs A64

I've been wanting to upgrade this computer for some time now. I use it mainly for gaming and it does ok for most games but Call of Duty and some of the more intense FPS games seem to bog it down. I had been considering the XP2500, NF7-S, 3200 or 3500 memory upgrade but now I'm wondering if I should just spend an extra 100-250 and get an A64 system. I'm not sure what components I'd even go with if I went the A64 route so I'm looking for advice. I usually try to stay in the middle grounds when it comes to cost, and look for good cost/performance ratio's.

Which would you buy if you had my rig and say 300-600 for a cpu, mobo, memory upgrade?

(see my rig in sig)

I just built a 2500 barton system, its nice, it overclocks, but when I think about it, I really should have spent an extra 100 bucks and got an athlon 64 3000. Buy the 64, dont do what I did :)

I has the same decision problem, except I went with the 64 3000+ and im glad I did, yea it was a little higher but i think it will pay off.

Obviously for CPU, I'd go with the 3000+, for ram, I'd grab a stick or two of Kingmax PC3500, and the motherboard would be the MSI K8T Neo. However, I would probably just wait until Nforce3 250 comes out.

Uhh... I'll sell you my board and proc, and i'll go get the A64 system for myself.......

Basically, go with the A64 system, I did my upgrade a while back, and now the credit cards in my wallet are beckoning me to make the upgrade... however, if the better processor has to come at the expense of having 512mb instead of a gig of ram, it is not worth it....

i've been contemplating this same thing.
I'm actually looking at the opteron based products though as a replacement to my aging dual axp's..
I've got a pair of nf7-s' as well, but I've enjoyed them..still might get rid of them, pick up a pair of ariba B mobo's with dual 1.8ghz opteron's. dunno though...$$ might hold me up on the final decision.

I got a SHuttle sn85g4 A64 box and it mops the floor with my barton 2500 oc'd to 3200. Not even close.
Quieter, faster and much more portable.

I have one of each, a athlon xp2500 (oc'ed to 3200) and a a64 3000+. I LOVE the a64, i have with a chintech znf3-150 nforce3 based mobo and 512 of ocz ram and it works AMAZING. Go for that, it will pay off in the long run.

You're all saying that the 2500 is slow? You gotta be kiddin' me. It'll run anything you can throw at it without slow downs. It's great and its mad cheap. Good budget. Is it an all out balls to the wall processor? Of course not. But when you're tight on cash it's definitley the way to go. I'm going to stick it out with this system - pick up another 512 ram in july and keep it for at least 2 years.

i'm not saying it's slow, i've got two 2500's, both do 250fsb..
actually, two 2500's in my nf7-s's....two in one of my mpx2's..i'm just wanting to try some a64/opteron loving..

I have both, and neither of them are anywhere near slow, but the a64 is faster (haven't ran benches) IMO then the XP. And when the 64bit becomes mainstream, you will be happy.

And I just built my a64 system for under $600. It's as follows:
Chaintech znf3-150 ($179)
Athlon 64 3000+ OEM ($215)
512mb of OCZ ddr400 basic series ($80ish)
Then I had a case and vid card, but assuming that you will use your old ones if upgrading.

So hell, when the stuff becomes mainstream all I'd be looking at is a new mobo and processor. I'm personally waiting for a good overclocking board for the a64 but that's just my idea of having fun with new hardware. Anyhow it's going to be a good 2 years before 64 bit stuff comes out?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the athlon 64 in itself isn't a very good overclocking chip.

that's what will be in my new pc, minus the pc3500

I would wait until a decent version of 64 bit Linux is out, or the 64bit version of Windows XP. You really aren't going to use the full potential of your CPU until that, and software, are available. :)
