This little news item is sure to cause a bit of debate. Research firm iSuppli is predicting that Intel will remain at the top of the list of chipmakers while AMD will drop off the top ten list in 2008.

Intel will increase its market share by the end of 2007 to 12.5 percent, keeping its place as the world's top chipmaker, while rival AMD will drop out of the top 10, research firm iSuppli predicted. Samsung Electronics will remain the world's second-biggest chipmaker with 7.4 percent of the market while Toshiba will rise to third place, pushing Texas Instruments to number four, iSuppli said.

off-topic, but i immediately discredit any new company using the name "i[insert witty roundtable brainstorm here]".

...no matter how soon they were caught up in the iEverything pandemic or how well done their research was in this particular stats-grab.

incomplete sentences are.

snaggletooth for president!

Darn, forgot I can't edit. I find it strange that Samsung isn't number 1. I mean, Intel does make a lot of chips, especially since it does CPUs, chipsets, and integrated video. But Samsung makes EVERYTHING.

And they list Sony as jumping up... I thought Sony was leaving the chip-making market.

this report seems a bit odd....maybe i should start a company called iTouchMyself and see if i can sell it to an investor.

I'll go in on this venture with you. I've been thinking about starting a company with such a name since i was about...13! How much you wanna bet Google starts it before anyone else?

Too bad iSuppli isn't exactly new, whenever you hear a component breakdown of a product and how much everything costs, that data comes from iSuppli. They aren't some random new company...

I do too.

.... You should know that iSuppli has been around for over 8 years now, though.

This is interesting because as much as everyone can agree that Intel is dominating AMD, many would say that it is not the best thing for the long term. Intel's insane pricing is part of their strategy to dominate the competition but in the long term I think we can all agree that it is not in the consumers best interest. Just like the Miami Dolphins, it is high time AMD sold the franchise to more competent hands (i'm not bashing Hector Ruiz). The question is who would bite? I don't think Nvidia would even try. My personal opinion is Samsung should step up to the plate. They're probably just waiting for the Stock to go low enough. :p

Fine; the "new company" part is retracted, the "stupid name" part still stands.

Stupid name is a stupid name, but Yahoo and Google both had stupid names. iSuppli is pretty ubiquitous in tech news and analysis. It started way back when everything was iThis, eThat, .Com everything.

Look to the right, news outlets who use iSuppli analysis.
