EETimes says that AMD’s upcoming Barcelona processor will sport floating-point performance 42 percent higher than Intel’s Xeon X5355 processor.

The news marked the first performance numbers AMD has provided for the chip that packs four Opteron cores on a single die and will be in production this fall. AMD also demonstrated working versions of its next-generation graphics chip the R600 to be released by the end of June.

last I checked AMD has always had better FP performance...or at least since A64 hit.

"Floating Point Performance?" What does that mean, SuperPI? Note how they didn't actually said "Barcelona will be 42% faster than Conroe."

I'll believe it when I see it. AMD has lost every ounce of my trust they won during the AMD64 era. A homeless person off the street is more trustworthy than them at this point.

are they going to do anything else with the 1207FX dual socket setup? Is there still only one mobo for it?

According to arstechnica, the 40% improvement claim is for specfp_rate. Spec is a pretty serious floating point benchmark, but the choice of _rate implies that the memory system is probably the limiting factor, and this is where AMD beats Intel. This doesn't say much about what happens when not all of the cores are busy (as usual).

It's probably a SpecFP peak (not base) comparison. AMD loves to quote those numbers even when independent testing shows differences. :p

A tactic the probably learned from Intel.

It's a good thing Intel is sitting still and won't be releasing anything new between now and fall.

Im not sure about AMD anymore... They could learn a lot from this book

I'll beleive it when I have one in my hands, otherwise... Its just BS to me.

I agree, the AMD we grew to love in 2001-2004 doesn't even exist any more. Instead its been replaced with an AMD reminiscent of Enron: "Things are getting better, we promise! There's nothing wrong, everything is fine, really, we promise, trust us!!!"
