AMD stock

oh interestin, intel better be gone.

If Intel was gone then half of us wouldn't be able to afford the price AMD would put on their CPU's and if Intel was gone then AMD wouldn't have a chip giant to licence technology from. The x86 architecture that AMD's chips are built around and the instruction sets like SSE,SSE2,SSE3 didn't just come from nowhere.

So what does amd get when they win this? What if Intel says to the companies still, if you sell AMD we won't send you our intel's..Its not like Intel is required to sell it to retailers...But, if they don't it looks like they're screwed.

well the real issue for the time being.. supply. AMD doesn't have the fab ability to really create a good supply of chips yet. fab36 should fix this though

The only reason this is news at all is because AMD and Intel haven’t sued each other for a few years. It used to be a bi-monthly event. ;)

Maxtor, Western Digital and Seagate seem to be able to co-exist in the hard drive market.
So, I don't know why it would be impossible for AMD and Intel to be sold by the same company like Dell. Dell is not offering consumers a choice and...ah, screw Dell, they make proprietary computers anyway.

As far as buying their stock, I'm too scared. I've paid a price for speculating before.

Fab36 is :D

This lawsuit is :(

Why anyone would hope Intel gets in trouble for voluntary contracts with OEM's is

The argument AMD is making, is that not all of those contracts were quite voluntary...whether or not they can prove it? We'll find out.

What, did the government step in and say "If you don't buy the Pentium 4's, you're losing your business license!" ?

I really have a hard time seeing AMD eye-to-eye on this. I'd really like to have more facts, but, I'm skeptical of any anti-trust related lawsuit since Microsoft was sued for no good reason.

Wasn't Microsoft found guilty of monopolistic and unlawful business practices? Not that I don't like them or anything, I'm rather fond of them in a twisted sort of way.

In Dell's case specifically, I don't think they care...best I can tell Dell uses AMD as a stick to get better deals out of Intel.

People bitched about Microsoft having windows media player. Well, the socialistic EU did. So they made Microsoft make Windows XP N or whatever it's called. The irony is that stores don't want to stock it since its the same price. I wish MS called it Windows European Union Edition.

They also, yeah, didnt like windows and thought Microsoft was a monopoly. Right. I guess Mac OS, Linux, Unix, OpenBSD, Solaris, etc don't exist.

Well I kinda thought all the metoo stuff was pretty retarded.

The existance of competitors, does not negate actions they took contrary to laws designed to foster competition.

Castro + election = free and democratic country, right? By the same reasoning.

Neither did the AMD64 ISA, but hey, who's counting.

We need both Intel and AMD. Intel, however, needs to let their products compete based on merit, and not incentives.

The x86 instruction set would continue to be used even if Intel decided to either:

a) Move to a different instruction set. (Such as IA64.)
b) Go out of business. (Very unlikely.)

There are far too many devices and too much code that runs on x86.

Microsoft is a monopoly. They have pressured OEMs and others to carry OS' their customers did not ask for, and didn't want. They control enough marketshare that they are, at least in the United States of America, a monopoly.

Let me just ask you a question:

Can you buy a PC from an OEM at BestBuy without an OS?

Uh...haven't been in to a Best Buy in ages (years?) now, but the answer is becoming "yes" much more often, whereas it used to be an almost universal "no".

those of you wanting information on what AMD is bitching about, read their complaint!

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=922967

Its pretty freakin insane. AMD offered HP a MILLION free processors... hp started using em... intel found out...HP only took 169 thousands of them... didnt want the rest after intel gave them money to not use amd....money worth the remainder of processors.

Its an illegal subsidy.

Well if AMD manages to prove a monopoly like situation Intel will acctually be required to do so with no discrimination based on basically anything except numbers of sold CPUs.

I suppose if you bought a Mac, you could get a computer without Windows, but I haven't seen any PCs in BB that were without OS.

This is known as the 'Microsoft Tax'.

Keep in mind that I actually do appreciate some MS products. (Windows 2000 is their best OS to date, IMO. It's a shame they're discontinuing support!) MS is also supposed to be a great employer, which is commendable.

Anyways, sorry to hijack the thread...

Intel & AMD have had a cross-licensing agreement since the late 70's. Amd has always been slow to adopt new intel tech (i.e sse,sse2,etc) Less than a year ago intel had no intention of releasing a 64 bit cpu, but look at them now, now that amd stole some marketshare.
Companies like dell & gateway that take payola are a bunch of bullshit, the fact that the majority of people still rate computers solely on mhz are becoming increasingly ignorant, intels hugely inflated mindwashing/product blanketing ad campains are horrible (but everybody knows the spacesuit guys , the blueman group and "intel inside"), amds inability to break into "mainstream" oems like dell n gateway is disturbing, and amds lack of advertising funds leaves me speechless!! Working in a small town, the few ppl that actually buy computers to play solataire and send a " 'lectronical mail thingy", hop in their pick-up, head on down to wal-mart n git em one of them there "P4's....It's got intel inside, ain't it?"
Anyways enough ranting, competition is a great thing. It keeps the prices down, innovation up, and enables me to have a choice. If ALL that I wanted to do was send e-mails, the curusoe chip is a great choice for a $199 pc.
If the allegations are true, i hope amd gets their day in the spotlight, if not, then I hope they keep fighting to provide a cheaper alternative to the industry giant.

the deal with microsoft and monopolies is pretty obvious, I mean have you read the EULA? We aren't responsible for any issues you have from using our product!?! To a business, such a denial of responsibility would never be tolerated from a product, especially when 99.99% uptime vs 99.7% uptime means millions. Talk to someone with an understanding of PCs that works for a major corporation, and uses a MS box/software, the stories are amazing.

Even the fact that if I want to run certain software, take any game, I have to run windows, not only that, but the newest version most times. IE. 3.11 became 95 over a game, 98 became XP over Doom3, I probably wouldn't have upgraded otherwise.

Well Im working in a bank and we consider MS software on anything remotly close to business critical functions to be "operational risks" so there U have it black on white what MS is compared to real OS:s... On the other hand we buy licenses by the wagonful for all workstations and for that MS is good.

I'm even talking about office work, lets say 300 boeing engineers in one building, all of a sudden there's a mandatory MS update that leaves your excel macros incompatible, and thus ~200 man hours needs to be spent to redo them, that's a large cost, that most times wouldn't be tolerated if it was another product. I mean, if a car gets recalled for power steering, but the fix makes the steering wheel incompatible, the end user doesn't pay. Hell even the notion that there are tons of "critical updates" is absurd. It's as if you payed $200 for a beta copy where your company is the lab rat.
