AMD says K10 will Knock Intel dead

Well of course it's coming from AMD/AT-, er I mean, the Inquirer!

I'd be really surprised if it didn't "knock 'em dead" really. AMD's turn to stay on top for a few months while Intel comes up with the counter punch with the new cores. And then it'll swap again.

And again. And again. But that's the way it works.

i dont see any quotes from AMD people other than "Barcelona is an architecture that must be faster" in that article....... don't see how they got "knock intel dead" from that.

If the best thing you can say about your latest and greatest tech is that it "must" be faster than the competition.... then its gonna be a longggggg year

Ruiz should get axed by investors for buying out ATi... really they could've used all that money on a couple more fabs or something.

If anyone read the article, you'll notice the guy never says "knock intel dead." All he's saying is that Barcelona will be faster hands-down compared to Intel's various conroe-based offerings. The Inq just makes titles like that so you'll read their little articles.

Yes, it could beat intel, but the fact is I can't buy one yet, which means its all hoopla right now.

But --- I would sure like to buy one soon.

Sounds more like a prayer.

"Barcelona is an architecture that must be faster."

"It must be!"

"MUST BE!"

"Oh, damn. It better be or else my car is going to get repossessed."

Mike Tyson said the same thing about Buster Douglas....we know how that turned out :)

But I do hope AMD can put out a good competitor..that will drive the Intel prices down even further..which is good for me .....

I'd expect AMD's K10 to beat out Intel's offerings at the time. I also expect that Intel will try to re-take the lead again with a new product further down the road.

The cycle will continue as the two companies fight for the lead. One may have the lead longer than the other at a given span of time, but it's the consumers who benefit in the end.

couldn't have said it better myself :D.

Or not.

However challenging this might be for a lot of people there is a very real chance for Intel to keep the performance crown all the time. Penryn offers IPC improvements over Conroe , new chipsets with significantly better performance , new FSB speeds ( 1600 ) and higher clocks.

Even if K10 will beat Conroe clock/clock ( which I doubt but may be possible since we have parity wrt execution units , AMDs has better acces to memory , Intel to caches ) Intel will simply bring higher clockspeeds.

sing along... "Domo arigato, Mr. Amato."

Lol...Styx and the 70's FTW :D

The thing is AMDati have done nothing but bluff, and in poker you have to lay your cards on the table at some point. We are approaching summer, and still I see no benchs have been laaked,no posts saying "Hey,look at this Anandtech article, its got all sorts of Barky benchs, because AMD grew some balls and sent them a system to test....like Intel did with C2D..."

All I see is hot air,and bluffing and innuendo, and a poorly performing stock, led by a ego centric fool who needs a reality check as well as a pay cut,and a pink slip.

A Multi-Billion Dollar company, AMD, with a very good track record for innovation, performance and value says they have something coming out soon that will knock the socks off of Intel .... and people do not want to take these words seriously?

With potential billions of dollars at stake, new customers, and a project they have been working on for years, I would take their word not just seriously but very seriously.

It's just a matter of time in what areas, and how bad the new AMD stuff rocks Intel.

Manny Calavera, and rthefley,

I understand the skepticism, and I understand the optimism. However, Manny Calavera, your argument seems to be that Hector should be removed because he is not as forthcoming with benchmarks as Intel? Ever heard of the Osborne effect? Your claim seems to be a bit of an extreme and naive position... It almost seems as though you have some irrational hatred for AMD or perhaps Americans with foreign backgrounds?

While rthefley may have a little more faith than I do, his opinion is more reasonable. AMD has done some great things in the past, from the K7 intro to the K8 intro. When AMD comes out with a quote that says that the K10 introduction will be more significant than the K8 launch, one would not be unreasonable to expect good things from K10 in a generic sort of way.

As usual the answer is in the middle, but, Manny Calavera, why are you so adamant that K10 cannot possibly be a nice big step for AMD? Why must it suck? Lack of benches? Lol, if K10 is as good as AMD says, they don't want to release benches as they fear the osborn effect may hit them in an already struggling half of the year. And what the hell do you have against Hector Ruiz? He took AMD from 0% server share to over 20% in just a few years! I'm not saying he did all the work, but it takes great management to be able to cash in on technical advantages.

let me ask you something. when you are flat on your back are you going to knock anybody dead?

What HardOCP told you in September....

On IPC and AMD’s Barcelona Phil Hester had this to say: “We want to stay focused on upgrade compatibility. We must realize more IPC per watt, and our next-generation architecture will show a 50% improvement of IPC per watt.”

Now considering they are looking to stay inside current power envelopes, and well, you get the picture. :) Barcelona is going to be a Conroe Killer if I have my guess right.

But in comparison to which processor? You can have a big difference within the same processor family, a Turion X2 has a >100% better IPC/watt than a 6000+.

what I dond't get is why a lot of people seem to think that it is impossible for AMD to re-take the speed crown....

AMD had the lead for how long???? Ever since the K7 came out.... the C2D was the first time in that many years that Intel beat AMD clock/clock.

For that matter.. a K6-2 with a board that had good L2 cache blew away Intels PIII clock/clock... and the K6-3 was even faster because of the on-die L2 cache.

And Benchmarks (especially ones that cater to Intel) don't count.. you have to take real world apps/games.

This reminds me of the wait AMD made us do with the delays with K8 when K7 was getting beat by P4 Northwoods in the late Barton days. All the doom and gloom, amd stock was down to <$4/share. OMG, AMD IS GONNA DIE.....

but their current position is far bette rthan before.
