AMD RX 480 Different Brands

I was hoping to trade out my gtx 750ti for an Rx 480 8g based on a lot of positive reviews and more games going towards directx 12. However, there are so many different brands to choose and I chose my first GPU as part of a bare bone kits. Is there any brand that people would recommend like asus, msi. or gigabyte etc?

XFX or Sapphire, in my opinion. (Aftermarket only now, of course.) However, have you looked into the RX 470 yet?

Is there any particualr reason why you recommend those brands over others? and I have not looked into the rx 470 yet. Most of the media has been covering the RX 480 which is how I heard about it. Any particular reason why you brought that GPU up?

Personal preference on the brands, that is what I have been using for many years now. As far as the RX 470 goes, it is very, very close to an RX 480 at 1080p with the 4GB version. (Cheaper too, if you are in the U.S., you can get an Asus RX 470 Strix for $199 on Newegg.)

I'll definitely looked into them both now and see the benchmarks against them. Do you run the 8g or the 4g version?

I actually have an Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro+ because I game at 4k for the most part. If you are doing 1080p, I think the 4GB version would be plenty.

the price for yours is still in the range of a gtx 980ti and I would love to get into 4k gaming but not sure of the cheapest way to go and if my motherboard can handle that so I'll have to stay with 1080p for now. Really new to this upgrading scene as you can see.

I just looked at the Sapphire nitro 480x which looks amazing and should last me hopefully 3 years. Would there be a big difference between the 8g performance and the 4g?

I personally went from a 980Ti to a R9 Fury because I prefer AMD hardware more. (That and for my monitor, the AMD cards have looked straight up better on it.) I have a Samsung 4k 28 inch TN panel that is not Freesync capable. When I ran any AMD card on it, 1080p to 4k all looked good on it but, when I was running the 980 Ti, even 4k did not look quite right and the down scaling looked absolutely horrendous.

Now, not everyone experiences that but I did, which is probably just as much to do with my monitor as anything else. I would personally hold off on 4k gaming unless you are wanting to spend a lot of money but, 1440p Freesync seems to be what a lot of users have been having success with. Either that or Ultra wide displays.

I forgot to ask, what do you have at this time for a card and monitor?

For 3 years, I would definitely get the 8GB version because even at 1080p, games will eventually use more than 4GB of ram.

I currently have an EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti Superclock w/G-SYNC Support 2GB GDDR5 128bit, Dual-Link DVI-I, HDMI, DP 1.2 Graphics Card (02G-P4-3753-KR). For the monitor I would hve to check on later but its a 24-26 inch Asus that i got last year for around $135 or soemthing.

Would you be able to point me in the right direction of a motherboard to use with a Sapphire Rx 480 Fury Nitro+ 4g, ( for some reason I couldn't find an 8g, not sure if it came out yet. Also I assume the cpu brand won't matter but currently I have a Intel Core i5-4690K Processor - Quad Core, 3.5GHz (6MB Cache, up to 3.90 GHz), 2 Memory Channels, 16 Max PCI Express Lanes.

I am confused, do you mean an 8GB Sapphire RX 480? The Fury is a totally different card which was release about a year ago. Just look for the RX 480 Nitro and you should be fine.

I got this Sapphire RX 480 Nitro 8GB OC and have been quite happy with it:
SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX 480 100406NT+8GOCL 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - Newegg.com

You say you already have a CPU, so do you already have a motherboard? Or did you just buy the CPU and are looking for a motherboard to pair it with? Because I am still using an i5-2500K which still works just fine for all the games I'm playing lately. So your CPU should be more than fine with an RX 480. If you do need a motherboard I'm not sure which one to recommend since I haven't been looking at upgrading lately.

I've bought cards from all of the major vendors over the past 15 years and all of the brands appear to be pretty good this generation so far. I've not read about any major flaws. The Sapphire and XFX look like the best bet in terms of removable fans/customer support. Usually the only major downside for Asus is they do not have a great reputation for customer service on their video cards if something goes wrong. MSI has more led lighting on it, the gaming x version anyway. Gigabyte cards are generally great. My only complaint there would be the looks of the card. Ditto for PowerColor.

I already had the cpu and the motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-Z97-HD3 Z97 ATX Motherboard - LGA1150 Socket, Intel Z97 Express Chipset, 4x DDR3 Memory, Max. 32GB - GA-Z97-HD3.

Pick up what Schmave suggested and you should be good to go.
I agree 100% I just want to run it by the msi gaming x version. Both look good but leaning towards sapphire. Now I need to look at motherboards that support ddr4

What do you mean you already "had" the cpu and processor? Are you doing a full upgrade? The reason I ask it because I have no idea what you are talking about otherwise.

What I meant is that I have a decent Intel I-5 cpu so I don't need to replace that but I have heard that you need a pretty good motherboard to use the 480x cause of the power usage it draws from it.

Because you are buying an Aftermarket RX 480, you do not have to worry about that. Also, even if it were a reference model, you would have nothing to worry about since they already fixed that issue with software.

Oh that's great then! Does anyone know a good website for comparing benchmarks of gpu"s? I have narrowed it down to an 8g sapphire nitro vs an Msi gaming x edition. Both similar price, similar features, but there is always something that stands out that some websites have tools/filters/software for finding.

Of those two, the Sapphire is the better choice, not by much, but it is a better part. You may have better RMA experiences with MSI but, I still would grab Sapphire or XFX over an MSI *AMD* card.

wait what is so bad about msi card? Unless I get absolutely steal deal I always go MSI, ASUS or gigabyte. MSI probably has the most painless RMA policy. Used them once before and it was a years back and it was all done online by me, got an rma number and shipped the board back. i am sure they have improved upon that.

Every MSI card I have ever owned has died, regardless of it being an nVidia or AMD card. If you go XFX there is a rep on [H] that will have you expedited if need be, XFX has improved upon where they were a few years ago. Sapphire has been and probably will remain the top of the pack for AMD...

well that really sucks lol. I got an open box sapphire fury nitro from newegg today for 249.99, had a gift card of 30 to knock it down 249.99. Hope sapphire has good warranty cuz I have never had them before for far I haven't heard good things. Cuz some people say they want you to go to original retailer and some say you can do a ticket on their online support system. I hope I never have to find out lol.

I haven't heard any recent stories but in the past Sapphire and HIS were about the same boat, 3rd party handled the RMA and still sent the card oversees so about a month turn around time, things more than likely have changed since then.

If I were to pick up an AMD card it would be Sapphire for the RX 480 and PowerCooler for the RX 470.

I disagree with this. For 1080p 4gb should be plenty for the next 2-3 years. He won't be running this card on ultra settings in 2 years anyways. If it's truely a $40+ difference to get an extra 4gb I'd pass, if it's only $20 it may be worth. If you can find a Sapphire Nitro RX480 4GB that's the one I'd get, or a RX470 4GB.

Watch the first 3 minutes of this for a good explanation on 4gbvs8gb @1080p

Check out the review here for powercoloe rx 470. 470s can be tweaked to almost 1400 core and perform with in striking distance to rx480 OC. I think 470s at 200 or below are worth every penny. They seem to selling quiet well and amd seems to have stock piled them as well. I think 470s are a big hit so far when it comes to mid range cards for running 1080p.

If you're planning on keeping it for a few years then get the 8gb version, vram requirements vary immensely from game to game, better to be on the safe side with 8gb.

Thanks for the video

xfx is the only rep here thats dependable when you need him! So thats something to consider.;) IF you live in the states xfx is an easy choice...Hardware wise they seem to be doing good as well. 5 year warranty on the fans and 3 on the card....for all non reference ones at least.

is there any website where I could compare the three? Msi, Xfx, and Sapphire? Like side by side benchmark and spec comparison website?

Just compare the clock and go look at how good the cooling is in reviews

Has anyone heard of sapphire"s fan noise issue? I read something about it and saw a video reviewing it but was hoping someone might have the gpu in this forum and can comment on the fact that it is really that loud.

as a general rule...up to 60% fan speed there all pretty decent and above that will not be silent. Sapphire should be ok as the rest. Maybe you thinking of the reference model?

On the Sapphire Nitro at least I can hear the fans when they spin up at full load. It's not an annoying noise but they do become audible (and it is relatively low pitched, like a whooshing sound). I can't comment on the reference card, but from the [H] review they said it sounds like you could wake the dead when the reference card fan spins up.

check 5:00 minute mark. It does sound like its louder then the asus strix model and I can't find a alot on the MSI model but power wise the Sapphire Nitro beats them both.
