OCWorkbench has a few pictures of AMD’s RD790 chipset. The big news is that CrossFire apparently works with four cards installed in either 2 by 16 or 4 by 8 mode.

The AMD RD790 chipset is an improvement over the RD580 or 580X chipset. The major difference is that it supports AM2+ and HT3.0. In the test, a AMD X2 5000+ and a pair of DDR2-667 is used. The board you see comes with 4 full length PCIe x16 slots. It is fitted with 4 graphics cards.

Lets hope AMD/ATI can pull this off with good results.

Yup, nothing like 4 2900xt's running eh? 700+ watts of power for them, probably over 50 db worth of fan noise, and a really large power bill.

Maybe with 4 of them it might beat the 8800gtx.

Christ.. the power requirements alone..

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that somebody out there is just waiting to jump on that, and God bless them. Lets see... (I'll round down for the sake of math). 250watts to power 1 card, x4.... = 1kW. Add to that the 4x4 currently set up, or whatever.. plus fans, multiple HD's, optical drives, sound card, and gawd knows what else...

THAT EQUALS ..... .21 gigawatts of power (1,210,000,000 watts), originally supplied by a plutonium-powered nuclear reactor.

Painful leech from 'Back to the Future" and Wiki.. but who knew that Doctor Emmett Brown worked for Ati's graphic dev. team?

Jesus they need to retire the SB600. When it came out it was barely on par with competition and is surely dated now.

I'm more intrigued by the fact that it has such little cooling requirements.....Ive been waiting for the july 22nd price drops from intel but man the potential on this new chipset seem pretty impressive....

Well even though the north bridge has potential, that south bridge sucks. In terms of power requirements and heat, the ATI chipsets have always been awesome. Total passive cooling on the RD600 north and south bridges and they are barely warm to the touch at 500MHz FSB speeds. That's nothing short of impressive to me. Even so the performance of those chipsets hasn't always been the best. The north bridges are typically pretty good but those ATI south bridges are probably the worst in the industry for performance and features.

That SIS south bridge used for awhile on Xpress 200 chipsets was FAR superior to the south bridge of the day and slightly faster than the SB600 is in terms of USB and drive performance.

Eesh... My long-standing love affair with AMD finds itself stunted. Now I'm down to the processors to love, and even those are hard to love absolutely with the quad-core intels out there. :(

ahahhahaha. Too bad the cpu sitting in there will probably also be slower than the competition :|

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Barcelona is nearly equal to Core 2 Duo. I've heard that it's at least competetive to being faster. I have no idea what the truth is as I have not seen it myself. Though Intel's Penryn core may again level the playing field again or give Intel another decisive advantage. We will have to wait and see.
