For those of you that haven’t seen it yet, here is the new AMD processor price list that shows pricing for the new six-core Opteron processors. Obviously this is for direct AMD customers in 1k unit tray quantities but it gives you a good idea what to expect.

What O/Ss will support/utilize these processors? I'm thinking desktop, or workstation, use. Would Vista Ultimate x64 on a two socket motherboard based system see and use all 12 cores?

Just asking

Absolutely. Windows Vista Ultimate (as well as Vista Business) is licensed to use up to 2 CPU sockets, so with Istanbul it would see all 2x6 cores. For anything over 2 physical CPUs you need Windows Server or Vista Enterprise. IIRC however, Windows (and Linux?) does have a 32 core limit, including the logical cores that are gained with hyperthreading. The Nahalem EX 8-core/16-thread CPU that will be released later this year could hit that limit in a 2 socket system.

As for actually utilizing the cores, that all depends on what kind of applications you are running. On a workstation, CPUs like this would typically be used for 3D rendering or media transcoding, stuff that is already highly optimized to make use of multiple cores. For the average joe this CPU (and especially two of them) would just be a waste of cash right now.

As if they aren't cheap enough. A 955 for $245 is cheap. You should be saying "Why can't Intel sell these cpus for the cheap?"

I wasnt talking about the quads. Cheapest 6 core opteron is $455.

Those 6-core (istanbul?) are Opterons, for the server market and multi socket systems. Phenoms are quite cheap, even the fastest one is cheaper than Intel i7-920, though that is seen in performance.

and it is again seen on the mobo price with amd, everything IS cheap.

Opterons is server market cpu's, 6 core wont be seen on a while in desktop market, my assumtions is that 6 core opty is like a quad I7.
