AMD processor for my GF

I'd say the X2 4800+ as it's the newer Brisbane core with less power draw, and it's midway in the pack for both price and speed. I'm assuming top end processor performance is not what your girlfriend is most concerned with. :)

What will she be doing with this computer?

I'd go with the 3800+ or 4000+ if all she's using it for is word processing/browsing/music/etc.

The L2 cache hardly makes a difference for even people that are benching to look for it; your girlfriend (or most anyone in a blind taste test) would never know the difference.

I'd go with the 4600+ or lower if all she's using it for is word processing/browsing/music/etc.

thats pretty much it, shes still in school. the only thing she likes to do is leave a lot, i mean a TON of windows open, but i already have 2 gigs of ddr2 800 set aside for that.

Sry, I ninja edited my post; I'd actually still go for a 3800 or 4000. She just isn't going to notice the difference, even when multitasking.

Although, the flip side of the coin is that the procs are just so friggin cheap that it doesn't really matter what you go for; she'll be happy with anything in that range.

Get a 4000.

I have one and I love it. OC's like crazy.

But overclocking is not warranted and hardly appropriate when all it's being used for is *general* usage by a non-gaming GF and not benchmarking and balls-to-the-wall gaming purposes. If clockspeed matters (and I'm pretty sure it doesn't) I wholly recommend a 5400+ Brisbane off the Egg for $99.99 shipped if clockspeed is at all a concern.

And an ATi Radeon 2600 Pro/XT 256MB as well if she likes watching lots of HD movies as well as a game of The Sims.

But basically you could toss together a Athlon 64 3200+ with 1GB of RAM and she probably wouldn't care about the difference between that and a Q6600 with 2GB, as long as it works and it does what she wants it to. At least that's how most females tend to be...

Lol when I saw the thread title I thought you wanted to trade your GF for an AMD processor. :p

If this is true then we need pics!
(I've got to get a general mayhem subscription.)
