AMD processor compare (3200+ vs Opteron 170)

I have a friend that asked me a PC parts question that I don't know and don't have time to look up for him. I'm not an AMD guy in the least and really don't know anything about them, so I'm hoping someone can answer this easily.

He has an Asus A8N5X MoBo with 2 gigs of DDR 400 RAM. DXDIAG reports his processor as a "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.0GHz".

Today, he found someone willing to sell him an AMD Opteron 170 for $40. Is this a worthy $40 upgrade? He's not overclocking currently and has no experience in it. Should he keep the 3200+, or OC the 3200+ (on air) versus buying the Operton 170, or buy the Opteron and try to OC that?

His main use is WoW and he's trying to squeeze as many FPS out of his PC as possible for a cheap as possible. He has limited means and wants to make sure this isn't just a waste if he can salvage what he has for the same results.

Thanks in advance.

No it is a bad deal.

Now go tell that guy with the Opteron 170 to e-mail me and I'll pay $20 for the POS.

Just playing. Last time I check 939 dual cores such as the Opteron 170 cost at least $100 on ebay. I sold one last year around $120.

For $40 I say just go for it. If not... just buy it and resell it on ebay and pocket the profit.

my opteron at 2.7GHz (opteron 165) is much faster than my 4000+ at 2.83 which was better than my 3200+ at 2.52GHz

Good deal, you are gaining an extra core, and twice as much onboard cache. That, coupled with the overclockabilty of the Opty and you've got $40 well spent

Get it, I have the exact same CPU, and waiting for my Opty 170 in the mail though mine only cost $15

I had an opteron 165. Opteron 170 for 40 dollars is a great deal. Should overclock very well, too.

My opteron 165 was really good to me, it's my favorite processor I've ever had.
