VR is nothing new. Color me skeptical.

Not VR. The point of it is to make room-sized installations.

Which actually ought to be pretty close to possible at present. Couple of ATI's most powerful cards in Crossfire doing Eyefinity to a few dozen wall-panel sized displays projected (so there would be no bevels) in a spherical room...use something like a PC version of Kinect (which supposedly Windows 8 will support) for player movement/control...

Yeah, we are basically there. Just need somebody to assemble the bits and have a driver/developer relations team to get the interconnecting parts working smoothly.
 
This is not the Holodeck from Star Trek because that uses projected holograms through holo emitters. It is combined with transporter technology to give the light substance, matter.

We can't do this with modern technology, we can't even properly project holograms yet.

A bunch of screens in a room surrounding you in a 2D display is not a Star Trek holodeck, sorry.

It'll be quite a while before we come close to the Holodeck, what we will need is computer generated projected holograms in a room. We will need static holograms that represent real-world objects, and then live moving simulated people that can interact with you and walk around, that will be the first steps toward a Holodeck.
 
And the second that a REAL holodeck is made and becomes accesible enough for the population, then that will be the first day of the end of humanity! ;-)
 
Can they replicate Gates Mcfadden and Marina Sirtis in a sauna yet? THAT I would be interested in. I'd give them the old Reginald Barkley treatment, if you know what I mean.
 
Obviously they aren't going to have a fully working Holodeck, but any step closer is alright in my book. Most likely it is something a little more down-to-earth, like triple-head stereo 3D gaming. Or maybe they will be supporting CAVE type systems with Eyefinity? That would be pretty cool. Although you still can't touch virtual objects, a CAVE using 3D glasses can produce a pretty immersive experience (or so I've heard). For example, something like this:

I respectfully disagree. While not a holodeck by definition, what ATI is suggesting could allow you to do about 90% of what you would be able to do in an 'actual' holodeck. If ATI can get within the say... 8 years, the computational power necessary down to an affordable price(under $1000.00) and the displays equally responsble (under $3,000.00) we are half-way there.

There was a great interview with AMD development team. I think it was the engineer behind eyefinity infact in which he talked about this concept before. The basis was that it's press safe to say we can generate a 'good' image quality on 3 monitors. By good I mean near-life quality; IE, see Metro 2033, Crysis /w all the 'enhancement packs' or other high-quality visual games running at 2560x1600x4xaa on the highest detail settings. GPUs tend to double in power every 2 years and/or get about 30-40% faster each 'yearly' generation than the previous year's model. IE, 5870 -> 6970 was about 30-40% give or take depending on the title.

If we can produce life-like images on '3' 30" monitors back a while ago when the 5870 came out, today we can almost run do it on 6 monitors. 2 years from today, we should be able to power 12 monitors. 2 years from then, 24 monitors, 2 years from then 48 monitors. When you get to 48 monitors of real life-like quality all you really need to do is remove the Bezels between the monitors to create a seemlessly 360 degree spherical display and you can have a 360 degree wrap-around monitor which can effectively be the holodeck display.

From then on, you just need a moving-floor that responds to your movements so your always in the 'centre'. Much like a small treadmill that potentially moves in all directions. (backwards if your walking forwards or right if your side-stepping to the left). At that point, you can go for a 'walk' through a virtual environment. Add in 8 years or so worth of development in Kinect sensors x 2-3 sensors and the computer can track your body movements in 3D. You've then got 90% of a holodeck experience right there minus the sensation of touch/smell. Even with the case of touch, you can still make a 'pushing' gesture, the computer pick it up and make the appropriate physical change in the virtual environment.

An interactive, spherical environment that you can interact with via motion gestures that allows you to endlessly walk around in the environment. The few exceptions/problems I can think about come mostly from simulating 'driving' or using a 'mount' whereby you'd need a chair and walking wouldn't really be an accurate movement simulation.

Sure, its not a 'holodeck' by definition but it is one in spirit. I'll take that for the time being :) since I'm not so confident about my chances of seeing the 23rd century.

They should work with LCD manufacturers to design a monitor with a non-visible bezel.
That is honestly the only stopping me from looking into eyefinity.
I would be cool if this were seamless though.

There are such things, just stupidly expensive.

The key for a full spherical display, though, is projectors. You can have multiple projectors putting images together directly side-by-side to eliminate the 'bezel'.

A while back there was a similar news posting about a holodeck and someone linked a Japanese concert starring a virtual performer. There was nobody on stage but this virtual person singing and dancing. Anyone remember the link to that video?

I'm sorry, it won't be a near "holodeck" until I see projected 3D computed holograms in an open space that I can interact with.
 
Their "Holodeck" is AMD Eyefinity triple projector with Immersaview NTHUSIM 3.0 for edge blending and pre-warp. This is a consumer level application for gaming enthusiasts. AMD seems to be omitting a few of the details...like it being Immersaview's utility that makes it happen.

In the holodeck you could WALK around. Meaning, you could keep walking and never hit a wall. ATI isn't doing that. What ATI is doing is essentially just making VR without the ugly looking helmet. That's it. And it costs more. The helmet can do it on a budget...what AMD/ATI is doing will require many displays and cameras.

Well, that's what the rolling floor in the video above is for. Dunno if AMD/ATI is doing that or not, but...that gives you that "free walking as much as you want"...just as much as the 'actual' holodeck, anyway - after all, that was a tiny little room, too!
