Ok so I am very very new to all this overclocking and core unlocking. To be honest I havnt even built a pc since Clinton was president so I need some help.
I'm in the middle of a home media server build in the worklog forums but unfortunately have not received any advice in a week or so.

What I need...........

1: to be able to stream multiple 1080p videos at the same time throughout my house
2: to be able to convert video on the fly for streaming to 2 ps3's
3: to be able to seed multiple files without disk overload errors
4: to be able to run as a HTPC for my main home theater

Hopefully all of the above at the same time
What I built..........

Then I unlocked all 4 cores and the confusion set in........

I read that I need to test stability of the unlocked cores with prime95 so........
9 hour mark...
prime958hourmark.png

And 29 hour mark....

When I stopped it at the 29 hour mark there were still no errors and everything was good.

Question is should I leave all 4 cores unlocked and overclocked?
Would I be better off leaving everything stock?
Why does cpu-z fluctuate randomly?

I've read so much conflicting information scattered around the web that I dont know what is right and what is wrong so I was hoping the pros here would have some insight. This will be an always on 24/7 home media server so I was told to lock back up the cores and not overclock to save on power but are we talking an extra $50 a month on power or more like $5? I was also told that overclocking it would shorten the lifespan tremendously yet other websites say this is false. Im so lost right now. I also have a few questions about raid settings and my SSD if anyone wants to tackle those just let me know but I will refrain from asking in this post. :confused:

Thanks guys, and sorry it just seems every website has different answers nowdays.

For video conversion, having all 4 cores definitely helps. Video conversion is one of those programs (usually, it depends on the program, some are multi-threaded while others or not) that benefit from multiple cores. Depends on how much processing power is required to convert the video in a timely manner though.

It would really help if you actually listed your system components vs just taking pictures.

Overvolting is the main cause of shortened processor life. However, it is still more likely your motherboard or some other critical component will fail before the processor does. I would see if you can lower the vcore a bit. You probably don't need 3.8 ghz for a HTPC, just run it at stock speeds (3.2 ghz) with a lowered v-core, and with 4 cores enabled.

What is fluctuating in CPU-Z? A screenshot will not tell us what is fluctuating, it's a screenshot for crying out loud. Everything in the picture is static.

Sorry I was referring to the 2 different screen shots above of cpu-z. I didnt change anything between the 2 screen shots and one reads the cpu at 3856 MHz while the other reads at 4097 MHz. Only thing I can see different is the Core voltage fluctuated between the 2 screen shots.

Full system specs are as follows.....

motherboard = ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G
CPU = AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto 3.2GHz
Ram = CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin ...
SSD = Corsair Nova Series CSSD-V64GB2-BRKT 2.5" 64 GB
PSU= SILVERSTONE Strider Plus ST50F-P 500W ATX 12V
HDD = 5 X SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
Cooler = CORSAIR H50-1 CPU Cooler

I don't know what is going on, but between the two screen shots, the multiplier is different. Did you change the multiplier in between? Or perhaps ACC did that when it detected that it was stable at that speed when you rebooted? It is very rare for the motherboard to just suddenly, most of the time you have to tell it to. Maybe it is AMD Overdrive? Core voltage always fluctuates, there's nothing you can do about it.

As far as I can tell it must be the Asus AI Pro software overclocking tool that raised it up. I never changed any settings myself. Just clicked "Start" on the overclocking software and away it went. I took your advice and reset it to default values and left 4 cores unlocked. My temps dropped considerably but the Vcore drop was minimal at least to me anyway. Anyway I'm back at 3.2GHz and all seems fine. I am currently rerunning prime95 at 3.2 to make sure it's just as stable at 3.2 as it was at 3.8. Probably just a waste of time but who knows.
Thanks again.

0.1v is significant in terms of CPU voltage. 0.05v is somewhat significant, not very, but enough to matter.
