AMD or Intel?

Right now intel is preferred as not many games (if there exist any) have been optimized to take advantage of the Piledriver's 8 core architecture. That being said, the next generation's console (both the x-box 720 and ps4) will be powered by a 8 core processor developed by AMD, so it's difficult to say whether a quad core processor is the best choice for gaming in the coming years.

Asking this question in Intel subforum, hmm what answer do you expect :p

jk, honestly though I'd go with intel for gaming currently

Intel and if you have a microcenter near you or know someone near a microcenter, I'd buy it there and some some money.

I would go with Intel, especially if you plan on having 2 GPUs in the future - AMD cpus are known to sometimes bottleneck high end GPU performance

Depends on what the rest of your system is going to look like.

It all comes down to how the game is programmed. I have a friend who is a programmer and I asked him about this and he explained that it is very hard to add in additional support for threads on a game pasted about 3. They do one core or thread for video, one for sound and one for game physics. After this point it becomes increasing harder to add support for more threads. So unless there is a major change in the compilers we are going to be this continue to play out for some type to come.

Thanks for the input guys.

Wellim currently in the process of building a new strictly gaming rig for around $1100-1250 Canadian. Just can't decide on the CPU. I've never overclocked before so im a noob at that. I think ill be going with 660 ti GPU, 8 GB ram, so just need a good CPU and mother board that will work in that price range.

I would personally go with an FX-6300 and upgrade the graphics to a 7950 or 670 if you can somehow reallocate the budget.

What games are you playing?

Are you in need of every part at that buget, or do you have any parts now that you will be reusing?

I will be using it for intense FPS online games. Mainly Planetside 2 and battlefield 4, so i heard CPU is really important with games like this. And im build just a complete tower, i have monitor and all that already

If Battlefield 3 is any indicator, it will be mostly GPU until you get into massive multiplayer maps, at which point it'll rely more on the CPU. However, the calculations in massive multiplayer maps are highly parallel and will take advantage of as many cores as you have. It's in these situations where Piledriver can sometimes match or beat the i5 3570k.

I think a lower end CPU like the FX-6300 overclocked with a higher end GPU will serve your interests better, unless you have solid plans to go get better graphics in the future while keeping the same base platform (CPU + motherboard). FPS games tend to be GPU bound rather than CPU bound. It is RTS games that are mainly CPU bound.

Depends on what you can fit in your budget, but an overclocked FX-6300 would probably fit the bill quite nicely.

Go over to the General Hardware section, you'll get better advice there. Make sure to fill out all the questions.

I would wait and see how pc ports run when next-gen consoles come out.

ps3 and xbox360 were using IMB cpu's and during porting devs favored Intel more and games were more optimized for Intel.

but because PS4 and Xbox3 will be using AMD hybrid cpu/gpu's I would wait because I am 100% certain it wont be the same like the current pc porting.

AMD might have the upper hand down the road, but if you don't to wait and want the best now Its obvious to go with Intel.

Of course, the ivy i5 3570k its atm one of the top processor for gaming in the world... Adding to the topic, intel for gaming nor even the AMD FX8350 can beat a 2500k or 3570k on stock for gaming... So if not planing OC a non "K" version of the 2500 or 3570 will still good and cheaper..
