Oculus, one of the pioneering forces in VR, seems pretty excited about it:
“Achieving presence in a virtual world continues to be one of the most important elements to delivering amazing VR,” said Brendan Iribe, CEO of Oculus, via email. “We’re excited to have AMD working with us on their part of the latency equation, introducing support for new features like asynchronous timewarp and late latching, and compatibility improvements that ensure that Oculus’ users have a great experience on AMD hardware.”
That’s the kind of quote that could sell GPUs. But let’s look at why LiquidVR is important before detailing what it is.

AMD released the Alpha version of their LiquidVR SDK (software development kit) to developers today. It introduces a batch of features that, according to the company, will be exclusive to AMD hardware — much like Nvidia and their GameWorks platform. If you’ll allow me a brief moment to get technical, they include:
Hardware-Accelerated Time Warp (the coolest name for anything I’ve heard in months), which uses updated information on a user’s head position after a frame has been rendered and then warps the image to reflect the new viewpoint just before sending it to a VR headset. I’m not sure what half of that means, but it effectively minimizes latency which is important.
Affinity Multi-GPU, which lets developers harness multiple graphics cards to improve frame rates in VR software by letting them assign specific tasks to each GPU. So, imagine one GPU doing the rendering work for each eye and then combining them into a single, smooth 3D image.
Direct-to-display will allow things like booting directly to a VR display, and enhancing extended display features inside of Windows.
