44 Percent Year-on-Year Sales Growth in Microprocessors Highlighted by Accelerated Mobile Processor Sales

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2005-- AMD (NYSE:AMD - News) today reported sales of $1.523 billion and net income of $76 million, amounting to $0.18 per diluted share, for the quarter ended September 25, 2005.

Third quarter sales were up 23 percent compared to the third quarter of 2004 and increased 21 percent from the second quarter of 2005. In the third quarter of 2004, AMD reported sales of $1.239 billion and net income of $44 million, or $0.12 per diluted share. In the second quarter of 2005, AMD reported sales of $1.260 billion and net income of $11 million, or $0.03 per share. Operating income in the third quarter of 2005 was $79 million as compared to operating income of $68 million in the third quarter of 2004 and an operating loss of $7 million in the second quarter of 2005.

And in other news, wimpy Private jones increased his pushups from 1 to 5, a 500% increase!!!! Meanwhile manly uber-sarge increased a pathetic 5%, only 100 to 105 pushups! What a looser!

Im not hating guys, seriously, I love AMD. But companies need to make money. 5% profit = pretty weak, and it sure as hell aint KICKS ASS OMG
 
good news, doesn't necessarily that P.E ratio is going to go back to investors in form of dividends though.

I still hope they continue to put out new and better chips every step of the way like they have been doing.

It is big news, here is why.
1) For much of their life, AMD has operated at a loss, $76,000,000 in profit for one quarter is hardly shoddy by any means.
2) Sales figures up 23% over the same period last year is good.
3) You don't have a multi-billion dollar company :p

You realize that some companies are still doing well even if they're operating at a loss, right? This is very good.
 
amd's earnings were cheifly from their flash memory business which iirc is the part of their business that fueled their ability to do more in the processor industry. that and massive loans. i mean the reason they been showing losses so much is cuz of the large debt they have from building fab 36 (launches this week whee!) and puttin all this money into make these a64's we use.

anyhoo amd transitioned their very profitable and successful flash memory group into a spinoff company called spansion which they are making into an IPO now since they essentially only had that company to get the money they needed to build procs.... now they will sell it iirc for more money and so they can get back to full 100% concentration on their cpu biz.
someone with actual amd stocks wanna confirm/deny my lil rant?

ahem......i willing to bet a lot of money that many CEOs will seriously say that this isn't necessarily true. Loss can be much better than profit. Some companies are simply there to create a loss due to tax reasons. AMD might not be one of these companies, but the good'ol'profit>loss is really not always true.

From what I've read their flash memory business has been a big failure and has been dragging down there earning reports and that's why they spun it off. Their processor division has been profitable for at least a year.
