AMD June 11 launch date?

Hell I hope AMD comes out with a good product this time.I have a 1090t plus the machine in sig.I would not mind bying a Bulldozer cpu if their good.

I was also factoring in that games are only going to increase in cpu intensity as well in the future. However, with the likelihood that we now won't see a next gen video game console till 2015, that probably won't be an issue since we are so insanely console bound right now.

The graphics in the xbox360 are still radeon x1900 level, I can't believe there isn't something closer than 2015 for a console upgrade.

If Nintendo released a Wii+ that beats PS3/XBox and still made a buck it wouldn't take but a month or two before the others get off their butts.

Is April over yet?

LOL, almost self pwned myself buy getting a new am3 board to use with some ddr3 sticks I have laying around, I forgot about these chips coming out! I'll hold off the upgrade till then.

You have to admit that it is amazing what developers have done with the Xbox 360's graphics. When you look at how awesome Forza 3 looks, you can't help but wonder how in the world they did it on 5 year old hardware. Look at the new Crysis 2, as it looks phenomenal on the Xbox.

I'm sure that Nintendo is preoccupied with their 3DS right now, but they will have to do something about their console as it is dated enough as it is. I just can't believe people were so into what is arguably a 2 gen old console with fancy controllers. Now that the fad is over, sales are dropping.

Well I hope these chips are worth it. My folks need an upgrade so if these are worth it then they can have my am3 mobo and phenom II and memory, and I will buy new.

Then again june 11 is so close to my bday maybe someone will give me a present.(21st even) :p

Come on AMD rooting for you.

Platform optimization helps but its mostly because they're running the games at oddball sub 720p resolutions and then upscaling to 720p or 1080i/p.

You can get away with quite a bit if you keep the resolution low even on a low end GPU. Just look at some benches of budget cards from a few years ago. The "lousy" 4670 gets just over 50fps in CoD4 with 4xAA and 16xAF @ 1280x1024 resolution. The same card will get a little over 30fps with those same IQ settings but at a resolution of 1900x1200. That card can be found for $55 without rebate right now, with you can get it for $45.

Bear in mind that because most of the money is in consoles right now that is what the developers will target, so the PC games are getting 2nd class treatment and little to no effort is being taken to utilize all the extra processing power they can offer. So the flip side of looking at how well X360 runs a console oriented Crysis2 vs. a PC is to stop and think just how well that X360 could've run a PC oriented Crysis2 that fully took advantage of DX11, higher resolutions, and more CPU power.

hey if its a Saturday you then cant get mad that they are not for sale on websites yet...

So AMD and Intel mainly focus on x86? What about the research being done in quantum computing, do they have any role in funding or lending man hours of research for the next generation of computing power?

Since the new processor is coming out in a little more than 2 months from now, how long before we start seeing some nice benchmarks?

Consumer quantum computers are probably decades away at this point, you might as well wonder why neither Intel or AMD are investing in using fairy dust in their transistors on a ground unicorn horn doped strained silicon substrate.

Next big thing will probably be package stacking and/or true 3D silicon chips. That might actually happen in the next 5 years or so, but we'll probably have to run out of process shrink head room first.

Also x86 is an ISA, its quite possible to have a quantum chip that uses the x86 ISA. Backwards compatibility is a pretty big deal to so who knows it might actually happen.

I'm all for the advances in the near future. I will now be preparing for the imminent takeover of skynet

I dunno man. When I see my favorite game of all time, Forza 3, and how it looks unreal while running natively at 720p, I just can't help but be damn impressed with how far the devs have come. No need to bring up Crysis 2 simply because we don't even know if Crytek will deliver on the promised DX11 patch.

Well you brought up Crysis2 so that is why I mentioned it but the same would apply for Forza3 or any other game for that matter. If you think it looks good on X360/PS3 just imagine how good it could've looked if they would've taken advantage of the PC's extra power, which is probably 4 or 5 times faster now at least for the GPU alone.

here's hoping that this time around FX wont mean, as it originally did, Fucking eXpensive

man thats gonna be a HOT CHIP, how you cool 3d silicon, maybe build it with water-pipes directly into the core? lol

also whats the point, seems you can make it as 3d as you want heat extraction will still be the limiting factor.. if you want more transistors just make the chip bigger or add even more cores!.. lol wouldn't a 3d chip just be cores stacked on top of eachother instead of side by side?

nahh F 3d chips, next big innovation in chips will be die shrink.. and then after that .. die shrink... then next 5 years time.. die shrink.., then FINALLY they will die shrink all the way down to 2-4nm with individual atoms.. don't get mad when i told ya so

Actually they were looking into putting water channels (e: well not water, but same basic idea, from 2003 my how time flies) that were powered by the heat out put of the chip directly into the die during fabrication process a few years back. AFAIK they got it working and did a few demos of it but haven't put it into a product yet because they haven't needed it.

Yea, a 3D chip would have the logic stacked on top instead of side by side. The advantage would be that you could get around or almost entirely eliminate inter die communication bandwidth issues and get some insane bandwidth going for cheap, like 5TB/s or even more. Image if nV or AMD could "SLI" their cheap chips into a seamless super GPU that avoids all the driver/software issues that normally plague SLI. You might be able to get 6990 levels of performance for the price of a 5770 since you can save on the extra RAM, VRM, validation, and board costs. Not to mention they'd only have to really make one GPU, extra performance would all come from more stacked dies, which would allow them to focus on making one smaller die and allow costs to drop further by improving yields.

Same goes for CPU's. Instead of making a monolithic die you'd make lots of smaller ones and the memory controller and cache and such could be on a seperate die too. To make a product AMD or Intel could just stack the necessary cores/cache/memory controller. Wanna make a consumer APU? Take your 2 or 4 cores, dual channel memory controller, GPU, L3, etc. and stack em. Wanna make a server CPU? Take 16 or 32 of those same cores, put 2 or 4 dual memory controllers on it, give it a huge amount of cache like 4 or 8 of those same L3 dies, etc. and stack away.

As far as shrinking down to single atoms they already know they can't do that. Sure they can do some lab toys that'll work for a few months, but single atom transistors wouldn't be reliable enough, electro migration would kill the chip in no time flat. The CPU has to last for years. Also you end up facing the same power density issues that you would with a 3D chip anyways. So you're still stuck with coming up with some sort of water cooling and/or advanced heat pipe/spreader.

perhaps, they decided to release on Saturday, so all the employees who attend the launch. Don't have to report to work the next day hung over from all the bubbly.

But they are in Japan. Sunday in the US is Monday in Japan.
True, but they aren't a simultaneous releases. The consoles are usually out in Japan at least a few days or week(s) prior.

Regardless, I'm pretty sure that most companies don't release products on weekends.

Well, they are late again, this should have come out in February, but they're not as late as they've been in the past.

Has it been confirmed that the name will be FX? Just FX, that's it? Cmon, they need a new awesome name.
