According to a recent report from SG Cowen Securities, AMD could be getting ready to go the private-equity route.

Rumors are running rampant that AMD, Micron and Lexmark are separately mulling over plans to go the private-equity route, according to various reports. There were other rumors last week. Oracle was rumored to make a bid for SAP, Nokia would make a bid to buy Research in Motion, and Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL) would buy Lam Research Corp., according to SG Cowen Securities Inc. (New York).

Dear God,

Please, please, please, please, let IBM buy AMD, fire Hector Ruiz, and make something out of a company that has tons of potential and idiot management.

i kind of doubt it, from what it looks like IBM is trying to get out of the hardware business...

although if it really wants to re-energize its hardware business it would be a good move... maybe the Power6 guys and the opeteron guys can make a Power Opteron

We can only hope. Megatron would finally have a worthy rival.

Good grief, someone buy AMD. Their Board of Directors has been nothing but pathetic the past 1.5 years. $42 to $13! gogogo!

Come on guys, AMD has had its ups and downs. It's been as high as $55 and as low as $6 in the last 6 years, this is just a low part. Wait for Barcelona and the HD2600XT, plus the R790, those 3 things are going to make it for them. Just wait and see.

I don't think there's any way that Oracle could get regulatory approval to buy SAP. Oracle already bought Peoplesoft and Siebel. SAP is the only other large company making Apps.

AMD had it's ups before Hector Stinking Ruiz came along. Good lord, that man has got to go!!

AMD's stock price does not suggest any buyout is on the horizon. If they were about to be acquired, the stock price would be up 100%. If the stock is up that much tomorrow, this rumor might be more credible ;)

What exactly does "Going Private" mean for AMD? I read the article and posts but I still dont understand. Does anybody mind explaining a bit please? Thank Ya

Oh, you mean like Athlon 64? Or were you referring to the early days of Athlon XP, when it was creaming the (RDRAM-crippled) P4 Wilamette.

Or maybe you were referring to AMD's long and successful partnership with NVIDIA throughout the mid-late K7 and early-mid K8 days? Or Opteron, which established them in the server market.

Guess who was in charge of AMD well before any of those things happened? Our friend Hector.

Before Hector, AMD had the Athlon (smash hit) and K6 series (reasonably successful), and some successful 486 clones. None of that comes close to the upset that they pulled with K8. Upstaging Intel for three years straight isn't an easy thing to do.
