AMD FX60 Upgrade advice?

I am looking to upgrade my gaming rig which is starting to show its age.

Currently I have a AMD FX60 CPU, Asus 8N SLI Premium, 8800GTX video card, Silencer 750 Quad PSU, WD Raptor 150gb HD and Raptor 74gb HD and 2gb DDR

My display is 22" 1680x1050.

I have had AMD my last 3 computers but its time to go Intel.

I am somewhat confused about all the available Intel processors.

I think I am good keeping my existing GPU, PSU, hard drives and case (c690)?.

So I need new CPU, MB and Memory at a minimum?.

What would be a good combo that would be noticeable gaming upgrade over what I have? Most games I run currently run perfect on my current system...but I am looking at some of the upcoming games like Age of Conan.

FYI, not that I put much weight in benchmarks...but my current best 3dmark06 score is around 9900. I do not OC.

I mostly just game....occasionally RIP music...but main focus on upgrade is for future gaming.



Really hoping to keep things under $800.00ish.
 
Abit IP35-pro or IP35-e = $140 or $70
Q6600 = $200
A-Data 4GB PC-6400 = $65 AR on newegg.

That quad core can be overclocked to 3.0ghz on stock voltage and at 3ghz it will destroy your older AMD chipset.

Cost to play = only $350ish with the IP35-e, q6600, and 4GB of RAM.


That being said - if you still play most all games perfectly fine - why upgrade?

Thanks...just the info I was looking for.

Am mostly wanting upgrade to be ready for upcoming games like Age of Conan...I have played the Beta and can tell my current system will not be up to the task of running the game like I would want. That and I do not like feeling outdated =P
 
What about Asus intel motherboards? I have always preferred Asus boards and had the fewest issues with them than any others i've tried..
 
I've been a huge fan of abit boards, but until recently I think Asus and Gigabyte probably stole the spotlight. --- BUT, if you read the reviews on that Abit IP35 pro...I think you'll find that it's widely considered the best motherboard available for this last generation of Core 2 Duo's and Quads using LGA 775.

The Abit IP35-e is the no frills version of the pro at half the price. Both are pretty much top tier overclockers and stability platforms. I'll let somebody else chime in about ASUS boards, but I don't think you could possibly go wrong with the Abit IP35 boards.
 
gigabyte p35 ds3l+e2160+any ddr800 2 gb kit should be less than 300 bucks on newegg and easily thrash your current setup when overclocked (333fsb, 9x multiplier, lock ram to 800mhz, set vcore voltage to 1.35 to 1.4v, instant 3ghz)
 
Asus boards suck....

my P5K-E died in 3 months. i only rana t most 1.5 Vcore into the processor.

if you wanna save some money you should OC that FX 60.
 
I'd go with a E8400 instead of a quad...not worth the extra dough..and no need to OC..

Yeah, the E8400 definitely looks like a better choice for me...essentially same performance yet cheaper. I seriously doubt I need 4 cores...I do not think I have yet to make use of 2 cores fully =P

Still trying to pick a MB. Quite abit of confusion on which chipset to go with..Intel or NVidia. And reading some of the comments on Newegg to some of the MB's i want to make sure I get one that will support the E8400 out of the box...otherwise I have no way to flash the bios.

As far as the processor, Q6600 or E8400 seems to be the big debate an depending on what you do, one will suite you better than the other. If Age of Conan's CPU requirments are similar to games like Assissins Creed, UT3 or SupCom, you might want to reconsider goind dual over quad, as those games scale well to quad core.

Also keep in mind that playing a Beta is not an indication of how well the final release will play. Beta's still have a bunch of debug code and lack many optomizations.

To even run AoC beta where its somewhat playable on my current system...I have to set affinity to a single core... From reading the AoC forums seems to be common to have to only use single core with AMD cpus.

Ironically my laptop which just has a T5550 (1.83) cpu and 8800GTS can run the AoC beta way better.

So I am not entirely sure what the deal is. Could be I am overdue for windows wipe/re-install.

But its been about 2 years since ive upgraded my CPU/MB....which actually is the longest ive gone without upgrading CPU/MB :)

Was looking at that very same MB just a few hours ago.

Ive only had experience with one Gigabyte MB a few years back and it was a dud...but this one seems to be well regarded.

Spending $500 or so for me really is not that big a deal...assuming the upgrade is noticeable. I just want to get the best I can.

Appreciate all the advice :)
