I'm planning on doing a little upgrading to my computer as I have a bit of extra cash laying around. The good people on these forums have convinced my that purchasing an SSD is well worth the money so I will go ahead and purchase an SSD for sure. But, I am also considering buying a new CPU and motherboard with hopes of overclocking in mind...
For some reason I am really looking at the AMD FX 8350 CPU as I would like to stick with an AMD processor, and I notice it comes out of the box at 4.0GHz which is very nice. What are your thoughts on the CPU? Also I have noticed some listing for the chip that say 4.0(4.2 Turbo) what exactly is the whole 4.2 turbo about...
If I decided on this chip (AMD FX 8350) I would absolutely like to do some over clocking and that is why I think I will be needing a new motherboard as well, a motherboard that will allow for easy over clocking (for instance the mobo I have now...people are saying it doesn't have "direct vrm cooling" etc.

So to break this down, I am thinking of purchasing a new CPU/Motherboard that will allow for easy upgrading..what are your thoughts on the 8350 and what would you recommend as a CPU/mobo combination?
Also, would you recommend buying the CM Hyper 212 for this processor as I'd like to do some OC'ing or something else? Stock?

Thanks so much!

Current Setup is below:
Ram: g.Skill Ripjaws 8gb
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2
Motherboard: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3
Power: 600W OCZ
Case: MidTower
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 460

AMD processor, and I notice it comes out of the box at 4.0GHz which is very nice.

4.0 GHz is not exactly a nice feature but more of a necessity to make up for its 40% to 60% lower IPC than the competition.

What do you mean lower IPC?
Also, in terms of Intel
I mainly use my PC to surf multiple multiple tabs in Firefox, downloading w/ uTorrent, playing videos on my second monitor, etc..

If I were to buy an Intel CPU will it be compatible with the rest of my components (GPU, Ram, etc)? Basically I just need to switch the CPU (obviously) and buy a compatible motherboard correct?

If I were to buy a new CPU I'm currently looking most likely to buying an Intel i5 or i7 but wouldn't know which one to select or what exactly to look for.
What would you recommend for a new Intel CPU and compatible motherboard? I will definitely be over clocking as well and don't want my motherboard to hold me back.

It means that the processor does less per clock than current Intel processors. If you wanted to go to an i5 or i7, you would need to get a new motherboard but your other components should still work. Have you tried overclocking your 955? You could probably get it close to 4ghz with proper cooling.

I have OC'd it from 3.2 to 3.6 but I only have stock cooling...

So in terms of comparing them Intel and AMD processors in the same class..Intel is the way to go

Ive had an FX4100 and an FX8320. My FX4100 was crushed in benchmarks vs my Athlon 631 despite having a 600mhz lead. With that said, i couldnt see any impact in my actual applications or games.

My FX8320 flat out rocked at 4.2ghz (turbo off, cool n quiet off, minor voltage bump) as much as i love AMD its getting hard to recommend them since Intels have become more reasonable. Microcenter has the I7-3770k for $229 , or newegg has an i5-3350p for $179 i think those can be clocked up to 3.8ghz ( a few multiplier past the turbo setting )

It all depends on how much you want to spend really. If you are really going to get a new motherboard either way, then Intel is probably the way you want to go. You could probably drop an FX-8350 into your existing motherboard and save on the cost of a new motherboard.

What is the goal, a really fast PC for what you stated above? Overclocking for its own sake? Is gaming implied?

Switching to Intel and buying a new motherboard will NOT help with Firefox tabs or other general use like watching a video on the second monitor.

There's going to be a steep price premium for FX 8350 IPC vs. Intel to be noticeable, and it would require pushing the PC to do something. I'm not seeing "some reason" to be set on the 8350 instead of the FX 6300 in a different price class (Core i3), and especially with a 2010 GPU.

that board wont support FX series cpu's
