AMD FirePro W9100 First Look

Wow, I'm impressed on the 1/2 DP!

Also very curious in how they managed to achieve this. Makes it look like Hawaii was first and foremost designed for the professional market. This card is in a league of it's own.

Between the MacPro win and this 1/2 DP 16GB beast, AMD is really pushing hard into the professional market. Looking to see how this will evolve for AMD.

Anyone seen a price? I'm guessing $5K?

When I first heard about this card I thought, "16gig of RAM, WTF?" 6x 4k displays though explains it.

It's rather unfortunate really. It's like their marketing department is clueless or budget-less to have people on staff who know this market etc...

I would be surprised if these chips are same Hawaii chips in the 290/X cards and not tweaked / new revision chips based on the DP and 6 X 4K display capabilities.

The 16GB ram is absolutely huge and Adobe applications such as Premiere favor memory and bandwidth with video cards.

Funny, it's the memory capacity that those who uses these types of video cards will be after first and everything else comes second.

Looks like a "Full" Hawaii chip in the FirePRO cards. The R9 290x seems to pay a price for the DP performance in terms of power consumption even if it's not fully enabled. The 512 bit bus is also from that 6x 4K capability I'd wager, not a gaming target.

Yeah, the marketing for the workstation market is completely different. I don't care for LED lighted logos on my workstation cards to show off & viral marketing. BUT knowing complete SPECS and capabilities would be nice to evaluate user requirements and provide optimal hardware solutions.

Yeah, this W9100 is really in a league of it's own. The MacPro having Tahiti FirePro cards does seem to be having a large impact with developers integrating the AMD FirePRO cards properly within the OpenCL Apple "ecosystem", and by extension FirePro developement being taken more seriously on PC also.

It's almost like they're trying to keep this all hush. Adobe using your flagship product to show off their flagship software and 4K editing is something you want plastered everywhere along with specs/system requirements as early as possible. (You still have people in the Adobe forums asking if Fire Pros "work" with PP.)

I mean you want this info fast before departments complete their quoting/requisition approvals/etc.. Especially now that marking departments are evaluating HP/DELL workstations over the new Mac Pros. (Our department went all Mac Pros but dumped the XSERVE for an HP enterprise server.)

I've actually played around with some of the OpenCL stuff with Objective-C. Apple has some good documentation and getting a basic compute operation started is pretty easy using Apple's libraries.
 
Now I think I understand why none of the R9 cards even the custom ones have 6 mini DP outputs like the 5870 Eyefinity6 cards did. I was told that AMD would not allow the card makers to deviate from the 2-DVI, 1-DP, 1-HDMI standard.
 
The 295X2 has 4xmDP+1xDVI. Likely the reason to limit output options was something else than to protect the W9100.

Considering the other physical differences between this card and the 290X I doubt that would work.

I'd say they are spread too thin, that's what it looks like to me. Maybe with a dash of inexperience in some departments and/or management from the overhaul AMD went through a while back.

All, or at least most, of the pieces are there, but somebody needs to "connect the dots" which shows to me to be a management issue more than anything else. Very time sensitive if they want to capitalize on their quite potent partnership with Adobe and Apple to the fullest.

That is exactly what I was talking about and comments I've been getting. It's a huge step forward to have a good framework for development like what Apple has been doing.

Maybe, but I was referring to the R9 single chip cards. Usually it is more than one reason, but the card partners were prevented by AMD from offering anything else when it could have been either easily done OR possibly the chip was not capable which I have addressed in another post. It is something like an ASUS P7 workstation motherboard I have that will run 4 PCIe cards at x8 because of the NF 200 chip they added to give it that extra capability. Natively the P& chip could not do this, Maybe natively the R9 could not either but with added circuitry it could. Maybe that circuitry in native in the W9000 series OR will be allowed to be added in. All of there high res promotions have been toward a single 4K resolution rather than multiple monitors. However with the W9000 series the thrust is not only 4K but 6 monitors at 4K. They will have 6 mini DP ports just like the 5870 Eyefinity6 cards.
