The EE cores are suppose to use less energy. But if it is folding 24x7, does it really use less energy than the regular CPU at the same speed?
 
The easy answer is "yes". The not so easy answer is "plug in a kill-a-watt and compare"
 
I suppose I could put everything back to stock settings and test mine for you ;)

 
OK here we go....

Test 1:

CPU: X2 3800 @ stock speeds and voltage (2.0GHz and 1.25v)
Rest of the system as per sig minus 200GB Seagate and X-Fi (using onboard). Oh and no CD-ROM drive or monitor.

Idle - 114 Watts
Folding with both CPU cores - 150 Watts
Folding with 1 CPU core and a 1900XT at XTX speeds - 232 Watts

Test 2:

CPU: X2 3800 @ stock speeds (2.0GHz) and 1.35v (stock for non-EE version)
Rest of the system same as above.

Idle - 122 Watts
Folding with both CPU cores - 168 Watts
Folding with 1 CPU core and a 1900XT at XTX speeds - 250 Watts

Net Savings with EE CPU:

Idle - 8 Watts
Folding with both CPU cores - 18 Watts
Folding with 1 CPU core and a 1900XT at XTX speeds - 18 Watts

 
Yes. 100% utilization of a standard core is for example 89w; the EE version is 65w. 24w difference. Do the math...

And now that AMD is selling them for the same price as a comparable non-EE version, why not? Note that the X2 3800 (2.0ghz) version that consumes 35w is a terrible overclocker, so if you're wanting speed, just get the 4600EE (2.4ghz) version.

I see the EE versions at nice prices and wanted to find out before I commit more money to my farm.
 
As you can see from my results above you save almost 20W of power with the X2 3800 EE (65W) while folding. In the long run you'd save enough on your power bill to justify a small premium for the EE CPU. Now back in August I paid about $35 more for the EE version :(

Also I would expect the faster models (like the X2 4600 EE) to show even more power savings since that are running at a higher clock speed.

 
Thanks Roman. Looks like the EE version is nothing more than cores that can run reliablely with less volts.
 
I pay 14.3 cents a Kilowatt at the moment. An 18 watt reduction would give approximately $22.5 in savings a year....
