AMD driver makes pinging noise

I know this sounds strange but its true, last night I went into the device manager and noticed both CPU's had an explanation mark next to them indicating a problem. I thought this was probably because I had no driver installed.

So I right clicked both CPU icons, properties, update driver etc... It updated them both and as soon as it was installed I heard a constant pinging noise and I'm sure temps are lower since installing this too, its really weird.

My first thought was that the CPU was being underclocked but Cool n Quiet is disabled! I've since tried installing the AMD driver again, and uninstalling and I still get the pinging noise.

When the CPU's in the device manager had the explanation marks next to them there was no stutter in games too, and I dont know how to get it back to how it was :(

I know its an odd one but any ideas?
 
Only thing the driver does is enable cool'n'quiet. Will lower idle temps cause it'll throttle the CPU at idle, but that's about it. Not really necessary.
 
High pitched whines are usually power related. Check your PSU and the area around your CPU socket to see if you can isolate the noise. Also look for bad caps. It's probably a coincidence that the whine arrived with the driver install, but stranger things have happened. Keep us posted on this one.
 
The driver is 100% related to the noise, it happened the second I installed it. It must be CnQ related, dunno how :confused:

Not that worried really, the only game that I get stuttering in is CoD2, there is a patch that will fix this, due shortly.

Seems to be nice and fast running my X2 3800 at 250 x 10 1:1 with GSkill HZ :cool:
 
Whoa there poncho, I haven't heard of singing drivers myself so don't be quick to assume that its the driver. Have you uninstalled the driver to see if it is in fact the driver. Becuase if there is still a whine after you uninstall it, it is most likely a cap somewhere be it PSU or even your mobo.
 
Ferroids making noise as a result of the voltages being throttled?

Either that or the valves are shot or you need higher octane gas in your computer.....
 
Is CnQ enabled in BIOS? Seeing as the noise coincided with your installation of the driver (which enables CnQ), start by disabling it in BIOS to see if that solves the problem.

I have the same issue with my system. As soon as I install the driver there is a high pitched tone that originates from my motherboard and i have no idea what it is. Everything runs stable though so i don't give it much thought. Although it seems that I only hear the noise when starting, running or shutting down certain applications. For example, I hear it when i shut down CS:S without first disconnecting from the server. Interesting. And through process of elimination i have determined that it is not my PSU, not my vid card, not my hard drives or optical drives, the sound comes from my motherboard.

Sounds that SMPSs make

Most switchmode power supplies when operating normally produce little or no detectable sound. The switching frequencies are usually well above the range of human hearing, but your dog or pet dolphin might be driven nuts! However, under various fault conditions, and sometimes when lightly loaded, there may be tell-tail audible indications of the SMPS's state of happiness. The cause may be in the SMPS itself or its load.



  1. Tweet-tweet-tweet or chirp-chirp-chirp (sometimes flub-flub-flub) - Short circuit or current overload. This is usually an indication of a shorted secondary-side rectifier and/or if in a TV or monitor using an SMPS, a shorted horizontal output transistor. The power supply is in a repeating cycle attempting to start up, being dragged down by the overload, and shutting down.
  2. High pitched, but audible, whine - Excessive load. Like (1), this may be caused by shorted components. For example, a common failure a Panasonic VCR power supply is for the 18 V zener diode across the 15 V output to short due to dried up electrolytic capacitors. The result in an overload and whine, but usually not a catastrophic failure of anything else.
