AMD convert. What brand doe?

Which manufacturers, if any, have:

- At least a 3 year warranty
- Warranty attached to the card and not initial buyer
- Allow removal of the cooler

After doing some research I just figured I would update for anyone interested. Seems I have narrowed it down to two potential manufacturers that meet my requirements. I am not sure yet though, as I still have questions. I'm waiting for their offices out on the west coast to open up so I can call to verify for sure.

It appears that MSI and Gigabyte are the only two (out of MSI, Gigabyte, Sapphire, Asus, XFX) that have 3 year, transferable warranties. Sapphire and XFX both have 2 year, non-transferable warranties. Asus at least has 3 year, but is non-transferable. Edit: I have been corrected. XFX features a 2 year transferable warranty or a lifetime warranty to original owner if registered within 30 days.

What I still need to find out from MSI and Gigabyte is if they void the warranty for cooler removal. The ability to put on fresh TIM or a water block if I see fit is a must. I have not been able to find concrete answers on the webs, so I will call to find out directly.

I will edit this post when I find out more information about cooler removal.

Honestly, I have no idea how Sapphire and XFX sell cards with warranty terms that poor. Two years is laughable. Obviously people don't bother to read or research warranty terms or they would not sell cards.
All XFX models with more than 1 fan are lifetime warranty when registered within 30 days. Otherwise, the warranty is 2 years for everyone based on serial, regardless of who originally bought the card.

If you're not sure about the specific card, then just look it up. The 295 X2 isn't covered by the lifetime warranty, for example.

Thanks for the correction. I did misread the page. Reading is hard ;).

In my case, for all intents and purposes, there is a 2 year transferable warranty then. I generally keep a card for 12-18 months and sell it. As far as I understand, the warranty only goes beyond two years for the original owner if registered within 30 days. Please correct again if I'm wrong. Honestly, their warranty page is the least clear by quite a ways.

Edit:

I guess I am still confused.

May I transfer the limited hardware warranty?

The limited hardware warranty for selected Graphics Cards may only be transferred to one owner after the original owner.*** The following Graphics Cards are eligible:

1. ALL XFX Radeon HD 6000, HD 5000, HD 4000 Series Graphics Cards
2 .XFX GeForce GT 520, GT 430, 200, 9000, 8000, 7000, 6000 Series Graphics Cards purchased after April 17, 2007

Limited hardware warranties for Graphics Cards may be transferred if the new owner registers online at http://www.xfxforce.com/ within 90 days of the transfer using the same Registration ID as the original owner. This new owner registration process is a condition precedent to transferring the limited hardware warranty for Graphics Cards. The duration of the new owner’s limited hardware warranty will be limited to the duration of the original owner’s limited hardware warranty. If the original owner has a warranty for the duration of its life, the new owner’s life shall become the measuring life that determines the duration of the warranty.

Source: http://xfxforce.com/en-us/support/xfx-warranty

So it says Radeon 6000, 5000, and 4000 series are eligible for a one-owner transfer. I guess that's why I thought the newer cards didn't have transferable warranty, and still don't see how one could interpret that they are transferable based off of their warranty page. Secondly, it says limited hardware warranties for cards may be transferred by the new owner registering within 90 days using same registration ID. The duration of the transferred warranty is the same as the original owner. So the lifetime warranty is transferable?

Edit again: The XFX rep says the lifetime warranty is not transferable to the second owner. So going by that, when considering resale, it has a two year warranty from internal sale date.

In my mind that contradicts with this line on the warranty page.

If the original owner has a warranty for the duration of its life, the new owner’s life shall become the measuring life that determines the duration of the warranty.

I don't really think I'm a stupid guy that can't read, but this warranty page/XFX rep are sure making me feel that way.

The warranty terms use to be simply Double Lifetime warranty on Everything since 2007 (in north america region).

Then the 7000 series (and now R series) changed things up... If it has 1 or 3 fans, its 2 years from date of purchase. Technically not transferable, but if dont you have a receipt from the original buyer, can give you 2 years based on the serial Number's sell date. If you have the original receipt the seller had as well, we can give you 2 years based on the sell of the product. We only bend this rule when we know for sure its within 2 years.

The extended warranty, or lifetime warranty coverage kicks in after the 24th month. It cannot be transferred anymore.

If you're ever unsure, simply call us or shoot us an email, we have pretty fast response times, depending on the season. 800 880 3225.

Thanks for the response. I'll go with that then. 2 year transferable warranty unless I'm corrected otherwise.

How do you plan on "transferring" the card?
I've sold half a dozen video cards on eBay and I've never once been asked about warranties. I think most buyers just assume the card isn't covered.

I've always included original receipts with sale, anyway. Just to be safe.

You should really be concerned about RMA service quality since that's most likely the actual thing that's going to effect you...

Well I guess that's just it. Coming from EVGA you don't have to transfer the card. There is a three year warranty attached the serial number (build date). Your warranty can be extended a little bit by uploading an invoice if you are the original owner and it will go from purchase date instead of build date, but other than that the warranty is about as straight forward as possible.

If it's an EVGA card that has a serial number sticker and it's in your hands, it has a warranty as long as the build date on the S/N isn't over 3 years old.

I have had opposite experiences from you when re-selling, mostly here on this website. I know I wouldn't buy something without warranty, and I have found many people that are the same way when re-selling an item. It's quite rare that I don't get asked about warranty remaining on an item. I usually just state it in the ad to get it out of the way.

To answer your question though, a transferable warranty just means the warranty transfers with the card to the new owner. I've not had to actually do any transfer. It just means that the warranty transfers with ownership of the card.

Edit: Also, about the RMA quality being most likely to affect me, statistically speaking I disagree. Out of 3x GTX 670's, 2x GTX 680's, 2x GTX Titans, 2x GTX 780's, and 2x GTX 780 Ti's, I had one card that was DOA where I relied on CS. However, I have sold all of them except the 780 Ti I have now. So RMA quality has affected one card and warranty transfer has affected 10 of the 11. Resale value (directly dictated by warranty length/transfer) is very important to me and will affect almost every card I ever own.

I have these cards in your system and when you go to Warranty info, it doesn't say anything on the site, just has some info in some blocks.

I was asking what you do with your cards when you're done with them. eBay, the 'For Sale' forum here, sell to a family member or friend, etc.
I wasn't asking how to "transfer" a card/warranty, I'm not retarded.

Anyway this is going the generic "No AMD partners are as good as EVGA" route. We haven't beaten that dead horse in a while, might as well get our quota out of the way.

The only companies that match EVGA precisely, are MSI and Gigabyte (3 years owner and transferrable). And hey, you don't have to register them so you save 5 minutes of your life...
Their CS isn't as good as EVGA but at least you don't have to deal with that piece of tinfoil garbage "ACX" cooler.

I sell the cards, yes, via online forums. I wasn't intending to insult your intelligence. I honestly figured the mechanic behind transfer of ownership was more of a given than the transfer of a warranty. My apologies.

I'm not claiming no AMD partners are as good as EVGA. I haven't owned an ATI/AMD card since 2005, so I literally do not know and is why I came to this thread. I am simply describing my experiences with EVGA because it is what I have known and owned since and am trying to describe what I'm looking for in an AMD partner.

And as I said, I'm much more concerned with a warranty friendly to resale because that will affect every card I own where as having the greatest possible CS might affect one in 10. It sounds like MSI and Gigabyte are my two choices for that.

I agree that EVGA's ACX coolers are cheap crap, but I buy reference coolers anyways because I don't need that heat in my case. That is the one other hang up to AMD once I find the right manufacturer. They need to make a blower cooler worth hanging on a card. Hopefully their 300 series will have that.

I don't see any issues here, but the serial #'s would tell us more.

If you want to PM me the serial #'s for more investigation, you are welcome too, however, I dont see any obvious reason these would be out of warranty.

Thanks

Always had good luck with Sapphire. My current card is a 290 Tri-X former mining card off eBay. No issues, had it almost a year.

MSI has warranty stickers on their nVidia cards, while Gigabyte doesn't.

If you're looking for a card that has a transferable 3 year warranty without warranty stickers, then Gigabyte might be the only way to go. Having done RMA with them I can say they're mostly hassle free and pretty fast by RMA standards. (2 weeks total from shipping my stuff out to receiving new cards back, although I live in CA so that helps a lot with the shipping times)

Ok, so now I am looking at my 7770 XFX in its box and on the box it says XFX Transferable Lifetime Warranty. More info on the side of the box states as such:
-Improve the resale value of your card
-registration required for Double-Lifetime Limited Warranty
-Two year Limited Warranty Standard if not registered
-Program valid only on purchases made in U.S.A or Canada

Now I have registered it when I bought it. But also it has one fan. So I am getting a little confused.

There were a few misprints early on that had the miss-labeled warranty info. On those exceptionally rare cases, we do honor them, but they are so rare its hardly worth mentioning. I actually haven't seen one in our ticket system yet.

Thanks for point out an exception to the rule. ;)

I hate to thread jack a little but I didn't want to start a new thread. What do you guys think about going to a 780SLI to a 295x2 at it's current price of 660 after MIR. This is mainly for 1440P gaming and possible 4K later.

Quick answer, see [H] R9 295x2 review vs. 780ti SLI. It's a pretty self explanatory review though higher resolution. As resolution goes up the 512-bit bus on the 295X2 is able to flex it's muscles.

Thanks for the quick reply I've read the review but looking for some input from the members that may have had made the switch. Maybe their experience with it. I don't really care about any nvidia features other than Gsync which AMD has an alternative for.

I'm used to evga's killer support. But for AMD and after googling like crazy for best Radeon makers, I still don't know which brand has the best customer support. I want a company that has the less bs.

In no particular order: MSI, XFX, Sapphire, Gigabyte. I only have personal RMA experiences with MSI and it was ok. As for the hardware, I can't recommend the ASUS 290/290x as they seem to have temperature issues. Also the XFX tends to have high VRM temps.

295x2 is very nice. I put push-pull Corsair fans on mine but it still ran almost full temp at stock so do not plan on overclocking as it throttles at 75 degrees.
