AMD comments on Fermi

Eh if the 5970 was actually in stock at MSRP they'd have a case against the 480. The 470 is out of place, but the 480 performs well enough for people to buy it. Just in time for summer?... ...

I wonder if nVidia's actually going to design a real mid-range product instead of re-labeling a G92 or GT200. Mid-range is where the real moolah's at (i.e. sub-$200)

Basically they say if you want the best, they have the HD 5970, between the HD 5970 and HD 5870 price point, they don't have a competitor for the GTX 480, below that price point, they own the market. I guess that there is no plan for a price cut, well maybe there is for the HD 5870 and HD 5970 but I doubt it.

Bleh, AMD has already sold a shit ton of 5970/5870/5850. You'd think they would now want to stick it to Nvidia by cutting prices and forcing Nvidia to do the same and take a loss. What happened to AMD cpu prices after Intel C2D showed up?
Ah well even if they cut prices, retailers obviously don't have to, as they are still over msrp.

Exactly. M.S.R.P. means jack shit to retailers who will raise prices as soon as demand increases. Look at the HD58xx launch for a recent example. Complain all you want but if the market can bear these prices, they will stay where they are. Higher prices didn't prevent AMD from selling over 3 million DX11 chips.

ROFL....

somehow i doubt nvidia will stop its rebranding...

The real problem is the gtx 480 wont be avalible at $500 and stock will be hard to get.

Ati dosn't have to do anything till nvidia gets more stock and can keep cards on the shelves.

Apparently ati has already taped out some of its northern island parts which are for 28nm. However hecto something or other is a 40nm of northern islands. Which is rumored for qtr 2 of this year. That is ocming up pretty soon. Ati may be fine with selling all the 5870s and 5850s it can till the card is ready. The 5870 and 5850 are high margin for them. They are bringing in good money and if demand softens they will go back to the $380 /$260 msrps and will hurt nvidia more.

+1

I think the real takeaway from this launch is that Fermi has not forced AMD's hand at all. AMD is in the driver seat with the cooler, less power hungry, cheaper card that performs almost as well, and has ALREADY made them money.

Too bad the cards aren't at MSRP. I wonder who gets the extra cash, ATI or the retailers? Newegg can kiss my ass.

The people selling them. I scoured the net back in December, and when cashback hit 15% on ebay, I snagged up a 5870 for $340 with free shipping after cashback. You can still get them below msrp right now even at 8% cb and free shipping. I'm hoping TD will get them back in stock, comes out to about $350 when cashback hits 15%. Definitely going crossfire after seeing Fermi. And yes newegg blows.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep a look out for cash back and hopefully someone will ship free.
