I'm kinda curious what Intel fans have to say about the fact that AMD has challenged Intel to a duel....

Any comments?

“We are giving our competitor a fair and open opportunity to challenge our clear market leadership in a public setting. A head-to-head match using industry-standard benchmarks will arm customers with the information necessary to determine which company can best meet their computing needs. The gauntlet has been thrown down, it is time to cut through the hype, and demonstrate who the industry’s leader in x86 dual-core processing is today.”

Paul Otellini declined AMD's challenge. Why say yes to something you have no product for, intel has no server-grade dual core processor just yet.

the challenge, as shown in the paper I read today, has this invitation open until the end of 2005.

must use industry standard benchmarks, nothing proprietary(benchmarks), and the product must be commercially available in mass quantities (i.e. no engineering samples).

basically their way of saying "we know you don't have anything to compete with us now...but when you do, we'll be waiting and ready for you".

Burn?

(ignore the fact that both sig'd systems are AMD...)

I think its AMD way of saying the following: "Oh man, we are screwed. Intel has finally caught up to us, and there chips are going to blow away are chips, and we have nothing to counter Intel new cores, etc etc etc"

Now I am a Intel person and never used a AMD in my life, so it might be favored to Intel only, but its my opnion. Like someone else said on the forums somewhere, AMD is trying to steal Intels thunder because they have nothing.

Perfect flame bait right there :D

This is AMD's only way of advertising. because they have no budget to advertise, they depend on manufacturers like Alienware to advertise for them, and depend on Lawsuits and namecalling to get their advertising. its smart to rely on the media for free advertisements, but Intel is not falling for those petty tricks.

I assume by the "they" in "they have nothing", you're referring to intel?

AMD has dual core now. They've had it for 4 months(ish), and if the Tech Tour is to hold true...after next year's die shrink they may have quad core (hinted at, no verification).

And, why wouldn't you take this opportunity to tout a feather in your cap that the opposition doesn't have?

The alternative, silence in regards to the competition, which intel has played so far, hasn't exactly been as controversial as AMD's calling intel out.

Hardee's has a commercial that I haven't seen in a while.
Pregnant woman eating a 1/2lb Thickburger in a waiting room filled with mothers & their children.
The tagline was "Enjoy it while you can...because for the next 10 years you'll be eating Happy Meals", or something along those line.

I laughed my ass off at it, as it was basically calling McDonald's on what it is. Crappy food w/ toys to appease the children, not big beefy burgers to appease the adults.

Blatant shots across the nose of the competition are fun to watch, and as long as they don't move into obscure benchmarks and other references...but stick with cold hard numbers, I'm all for it. Even if it's AMD losing (as would be the case w/ Turion battery performance vs. the Centrino)

Talking the talk is pointless if you're not willing to walk the walk.

Do you have a source for this statement?

AMD Doesnt need to advertise. If you look at a hardware survey taken just by Valve (CS makers) 48% of the gamers use AMD, 52% use Intel. And to think of all the advertising Intel has while AMD has none. I say AMD doesnt need advetising, AMD sells itself.

Most of the people who use Intel are people who buy from dell, those who dont care for computers, those who only need a PC for email and for simple programs like AIM or Winamp, or a few games like CS that dont need high powered PCs.
I have many friends like this, guys and girls, who arent computer geeks. They all buy computers from places like Dell, where they only have Intel. They dont care what kind of computer it is and dont care about the parts, as long as it works. They dont care about temps, hardware, fps... etc.

If you go up to a person on the streets and give them 2 choices: IE

A Intel P4 HT at 3.2 ghz or an AMD 64 3200+ 2.0ghz

they see "3.2" on the intel and think thats better automatically, when AMD is the better one. These people dont understand teh architecture of AMD

Uhhh....You pointed out the exact reason that AMD does need to advertise....but good try at a competent argument

not to mention, gamers vs. Public. most gamers are well informed and knows there are other choices then Intel. However, the GP does not know or care about benchmarks, etc. they hear the name "Centrino" and think "i heard it on TV, i want that".

gamers NEVER need advertisements. its the rest of the world that does. that's who AMD is targeting right now. Joe the stock broker open up the wall street journal and reads AMD is challenging Intel, or AMD is suing Intel. then they think "well AMD must be a good company". well, at least I hope a stock broker is smarter then that.

Nice try at not being biased either 0810. Only the people that don't care use AMD? Screw you man. I game, I have two Intel servers, one propietary printer server and four workstations. They are all Intel and they are all one hell of a lot more reliable than AMD will ever be. 365 days a year 24 hours a day these machines are up and running because they have to be. That's a lot more than I can say for any of AMD's home level products.

AMD does not have anywhere close to 50% of the market. Intel currently holds over 80% of the market.

Intel doesn't need to play AMD's bullshit little games. They are kicking their asses in volume. They, unlike AMD, are in the black by a good margin without having to sell their CPU's for nickels just to get them off the shelves. They, unlike AMD, don't have to lie about their CPUs by putting confusing ratings on the chips instead of just telling the truth. They can afford to have multiple fabs running to saturate the likes of Dell with product. People that do care and people that know their stuff buy Intel. Corporations buy Intel. Little kids that have their parents buy their computers or that buy their own parts by flipping burgers at McDonalds after school buy AMD because they can't afford anything better.

The occasional business buys Opterons, but that's it.

Hmm. whose that company that sells computers for a few hundred bucks again?
DELL

Which CPU company is it that has to donate their CPUs to charity to show movement to the shareholders? AMD.

Gamers don't buy Dells ace. Consider your target markets before you flap your child-like gums.

QFW (Quoted for WOW).

Who, until the 5 and 6 series pushed the "more GHz = more performance" agenda?

Oh, Intel.

And who got the shit kicked out of them in the clockspeed race and so reverted to lying about their chips, claiming "We compare the performance of this CPU to our previous generation CPUs".

Bullshit.

i was responding to him about parents buying kids cheap PCs!!

if you look at dell, hp, gateway, the cheapest PC is an intel!

I admit that the 400FSB Bartons were paper tigers (stop gaps till the A64), but the A64's do just the same to the Pentium 4's.

Is a 3.4C even marginally close to a 3400+? (And before you mention it, I will agree that the 939 PR Ratings aren't as accurate as the 754)

The fact that you say "clockspeed race" only further solidifies your belief in the "GHz" aka Intel Marketing Machine. If you said "performance race", then you are correct. Its the little things that reveal your true character mon ami.

Wow, first I have to say SirKenin your post is extremely biased You claim Intel is more reliable then AMD, what information do you have to back this statement up? The fact that you have only ever used Intel in your life?

Bullshit little games?!? Really all is fair, it's an open, honest challenge, and AMD could win or lose. I salute AMD for being so bold. If Intel thinks they are the leader they should step up to the plate. And for all those criticizing AMD about using cheap advertising tactics - SO WHAT? Why would you spend a bunch of money when you can have an even greater effect for free. It not cheap or dumb, it's called smart advertising tactics.

An as for SirKenin criticizing AMD for their processor labeling... don't even start. It is essential that AMD does this to compensate for consumer ignorance. If AMD advertized their true clock rates, for the uneducated consumer the choice would be easy. A 3.2GHz or a 2.0GHz, yet the AMD outperforms the Intel. How can you even claim AMD is lying?!? They are outperforming an Intel of a similar clockspeed.

But maybe you are right, AMD should use expensive advertising methods, and give their processors names that undermine their true performance. That way they can hand over their business to Intel. You have a great business sense.

Gateway and HP also use AMD chips fandweeb (and Gateways cheapest PC is an AMD. The 3200XL).

Intel just doent have the balls to go into a public dual cos all the poeple would be going "But they have more GHz and there losing AHAHAH" lol just my 2 cents

I have used both. I also sell and service both.

As for advertising, stand up and be a man. Don't bullshit the public and tell them you are comparing the processor to previous gens when in reality you are comparing them to Intel CPUs. They are liars. They are playing a game.

They can't afford to advertise. That's just it. They have to resort to bullshit childish antics like "my CPU is bigger than your CPU" because they are pretty much in the red and have been for years. The biggest majority of the market either doesn't want their CPUs or AMD can't fab them fast enough to make them a viable alternatives for a big OEM giant like Dell.

Let's face it. The majority of people don't care about the "My daddy is bigger than your daddy" bullshit we used to play as kids. Intel has a reputation for reliability, compatibility and solid chipsets that AMD can't hope to match at this stage in the game. A perceived bigger AMD penis is something nobody that's worth even a pinch of salt, including Intel, gives a shit about.

Further, AMD blew it early on in it's processor fab career by pumping out lineup after lineup of shitty chips. They cooked their own goose and turned the biggest player, large enterprise, off completely.

Let's just say Intel is a little more mature than "My tool is bigger than your tool" that AMD has had to stoop to in order to even gain but a moment in the spotlight.

As many say...

"It's been done".

Actually, You can post the string of letters 'QFF (Quoted For Funny)' anywhere on this forum, i just happened to post them in the intel forum.

What are you getting at? That people who defend intel say stupid things? If so, please go re-read the AMD forum's postings and compare.

Please stay on topic.

It was the clockspeed race, not the performance race, that started the stupid performance ratings. AMD got their asses handed to them and they switched to ratings. It was all the rage at the time and made for huge debates and outrage when they were introduced.

Yep hes right, wether some of us would like to admit it we are byist.

SirKenin you truly are a fool if you think AMD's arent stable etc. Well i spose my AMD 1.3ghz Athlon that has had an uptime of over 140days as we speak isnt reliable. Also my desktop A64 @ 2.4ghz which isnt reliable *insert sarcasm*. Yep i am going to sell my AMD platforms for something that runs 40C hotter and offers less performance than what i currently have.

EDIt: I think that most AMD users started out with an Intel becuase they thought it was better, but as their knowledge grew, they switched to amd and stuck with it.

you're both being biased.
first off:
They, unlike AMD, don't have to lie about their CPUs by putting confusing ratings on the chips instead of just telling the truth

Intel has fallen victem to this aswell, with their 5xx,6xx,7xx,8xx naming scheme.

However, the topic is about AMD calling Intel out, then you say that their advertising tactics have nothing to do with it? its ALL about their advertising tactics. Paul isn't an idiot. he is not going to do such a thing to improve AMD PR. even if AMD were to lose, they would still get their advertising in. same thing with the lawsuit. AMD could file as many lawsuits as they want well knowing that there is a 50% chance of them losing. if they win, all the better for them, if they lose, they already got the PR and made Intel look bad, thats all they're after.

Imagine if OJ Simpson actually didn't kill Nicole, even in that situation, the prosecution still won by alienating him from EVERYTHING. its not like once your proven innocent then everythings ok. thats what AMD is attempting to do.

I Dont care if Intel is better then AMD, this attack on Intel by AMD is simply a PR battle.
Even some AMD employees I know are pissed at what AMD is trying to do. If intel did the same, I would be pissed at them aswell.
As for the lawsuit, I will wait until the outcomes of the trial.

Oh lord, AMD tries to start a pissing contest, Intel refuses, yet the contest just migrates here.

FWIW, I think this tactic is bad form for AMD. There's being outspoken, then there's whipping your **** out and laying it on the table as a challenge.

Then again, marketing misbehavior doesn't really change AMD's performance standing. Current Xeons are all but a waste of time, and I doubt Paxville will change that.

Oh yah, almost forgot...

...

...

IBTL :D

AMD is getting some publicity out of this, but im not sure if these were AMD intentions.

even if they do, it wont have much of an effect on buyers.

lets say Britney Spears writes a new song, then when its released, some unknown artist guy sues her because her song sounds just like his song, same words! and the guys song was copyrighted before hers. Do you think its gonna make pre-teens wanna listen to this crap guys songg over britneys? NO.

i dont think amd did it all for adverts. but to finally prove the fuss about amd vs. intel

and if they did, where would that get AMD. oh yes, it would get more people to buy AMD. hence, AMD is advert.
what other purpose would they have? to save face? well that leads down the same path.

however you look at it, it turns into the same thing.

It's alright, we already know intel sucks.

Hopefully they can provide something soon.

okay, i see what you are saying, okay what amd is doing is an advert. but amd is the best, the consumers need to know that AMD is better, thats the advert. and by having INTel decline, consumers will never know the TRUE results, therefore AMD wont get as much attention as it deserves.

okay, i admitt, its an advert, but they deserve it dont they?

see.. amd people arent bad guys.... :p
