AMD Board/CPU Upgrade Drama

I've had a real streak with trying to upgrade my system (mostly Phenom II X6, 16GB ECC RAM in 4 modules on the QVL of all involved mainboards, Radeon HD 6950 on an Asus M5A89TD Pro) by putting in a new graphics card (R9 280x), new CPU (FX 6300) and board (Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0).

(Drama ahead, you can skip this paragraph; first GPU from XFX was DOA, second attempt from Asus apparently had dud RAM and produced weird graphics glitches, but that's just for completeness sake.)

The bummer is that with the new board and CPU, I got very frequent freezes. The system would just stop dead in its tracks, no introductory short stops or any other notice. I tried everything: BIOS updates through 4 revisions, different voltage settings on CPU and RAM, things improved markedly when I disabled Asus's weirdo EPU energy saving snakeoil reducing crashes from a few times per evening to maybe once every two days. Now I had the board replaced under warranty, and on the first day it froze again.

Now I'm on the new board with the old CPU on the off chance that the new CPU is the culprit, but I already had a "new thing" where the display would switch off and the numlock key would "lock up", but the HDD LED would actually keep ticking; that looked like a half-assed sleep attempt by the OS, except I disabled both display disabling and system sleep! Later the display switched off again, but I could "revive" the system.

At this point I'm just weirded out of my small mind and would welcome any ideas if I'm missing something. Known issues with the board? (Didn't find any that were close enough to the symptoms I get...) Anything else?

Have you checked your power supply? With that number of issues it would be the first thing I'd probably take a good look at.

The PSU was one of the things I considered and replaced without any marked improvement. The old one did make some noise while cooling down after high load (primary side still 20% under rated secondary load), but all in all it doesn't seem to have been the issue.

The freezes are also entirely independent of system load: I could run prime95 on 4 or 6 cores for a week with some luck, and it would also run fine in Unigine Valley or OCCT benchmark or a combination, and the system would freeze an hour after I turned off all load; other times it would freeze under load or while just watching videos.
