DigiTimes says that, according to sources at motherboard makers, manufacturers doubt whether the new Black Edition CPUs can help increase demand for AMD motherboards.

Some motherboard makers have no plans to adjust their current shipment proportions since they do not think the Black Edition CPUs will lead to any increase in demand for AMD motherboard, noted the sources.

Shocking!

You mean there is some kind of demand curve and a desktop CPU priced over 2x higher than the average CPU AMD sells, and using a last generation core, may not help demand much? I sense a future Nobel economics competitor at DigiTimes. ;)

Why would they think that the "Black" cpu's would increase demand?

Hmm Regular 5000+ is $125 and the Black Edition is $147 up here in Canada. Not a real big difference up here and honestly I never use the stock cooler in any of my systems. I guess I could save the $$ and have a nice dinner for 2 at McDonalds.

I think it's b/c 5000+ Black is more of an upgrade CPU for some that are already on AM2.

but it's a good move by AMD as it creates a very nice option that is price 2x above the cheap cheap 3800+/4200+ in a chance to create more revenue and more profit from selling 65nm cpus.

This is one of the most DUH messages I've seen in a while. Why WOULD people upgrade? The only reason I see is they have a ghetto mobo with no options. The people that buy a mobo like that in the first place are not the ones buying multiplier unlocked CPU's for overclocking. Enthusiasts buy the good board the first time.

My 5000+ BE arrived earlier this week and is currently running at 3GHz on stock voltage... in the motherboard I already had, an Asus M2N-E.

Then again half the crap posted on the H of late has been straight press releases anyway. Don't know why this surprises me.

they need to offer a 939 upgrade. people on 939 will upgrade to intel, not amd

I bought my 939 just as the AM2 came out, hoping to skip it due to lackluster memory performance. I am still waiting on the DDR3 platform, next year I suppose, (or maybe I was just waiting on the next gen AM2, hmm, I don't recall exactly.) But I didn't expect the 939 CPU's to dry up, which was the main reason I went with it. I figured upgrading the CPU once before changing boards. I don't see one I like anymore. Opterons are too expensive, 4800+ is non-existent, as is the 5000+ and 6000+ that is in the AM2 package.

That last upgrade was painful, CPU, RAM, Video, as well as CPU. Can't really upgrade a system to the new hardware with so many changes, it just becomes a new system. I don't want a repeat of that, so I wanted to go from DDR to DDR3 at least skip that next time. I was thinking (fantasizing I guess) that AMD would move through DDR2 quickly to catch up with Intel and move on DDR3.

I think these BE CPU's are the right idea though. I've got a 5000+ AM2 at work. I wanted faster, but also wanted 65nm. I don't have an overclocking board, but modest overclocks are easy enough on most boards, with good a CPU and good cooling. Unlocked multipliers always help, but usually don't make sense with their outrageous prices. Besides, I don't want the fastest performance anyway. I want an efficient system, fast, but not too hot. These Black Edition CPUs should allow me to get more performance out of my current system at work, but there is no system to inherit the 5000+. So I'll wait a while longer, as I'll need to make another "painful" upgrade.

It isn't just the CPU I'm worried about, but the entire platform, over and beyond its' life, and migrating parts to secondary systems. I've currently got three systems at home, Athlon 3000+ Barton socket A, Athlon 64 Venice 3400+ 939 AGP, and Opty165 OC 2.13Ghz PCIex. My upgrade cycle is usually a year and a half, it's now been 19 months.

Exactly.

There's no reason to go Black even if the multi is unlocked. You can still get a faster easier overclock with just about any Core 2 chip.
