Hi Folks,

I've always been an AMD guy and with the recent price drops + having my laptop stolen, I jumped at the opportunity to pick up a new system. This is my first prebuilt desktop system. Please tell me what you think, I wanted to keep the price under $1400:

Priced against a similar C2D setup with an E6400, the AMD was still over $150-$200 ahead. And the 5600 seems to compare favorably with the E6400.

Generally, I will be gaming at 720p on a tv/lcd. Games I am planning on playing include: Oblivion, Supreme Commander, CnC3, GalCiv II, Civ4, Stalker, Company of Heroes, Warhammer. Basically, RTS and FPS at moderate resolutions and high detail, maybe a few older adventure games.

Thanks for all your help and advice, these forums have been invaluable. I'm hoping to order today :).

edit: Forgot to add, I already have an MX518 for gaming usage, the wireless input set is for HTPC usage. Also, I don't have enough space in my apartment for a speaker setup, hence no speakers or sound card, will probably run pass through from headphones to tv speakers.

Order placed. I couldn't hold out any longer. Before this system, I had a mobile X700 and before that a geforce3. I can barely wait :).

I have to say, incredible service from Misha Troishin. Not less than 5 minutes after I placed my order, he contacted me to tell me my case was out of stock. That kind of fast response is phenomenal.

I might ask what games you expect to play, at what res, and on what monitor. That might lead to a vidcard upgrade. Pops your budget a little but might be worth it.

You can see I did list it under the specs of my build:

Basically, at 1360x768, a very moderate resolution, I think the GTS 8800 should be sufficient even for playing newer FPS.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

Well, I gave in and picked up a Klipsh 2.1 thx system from Fortuna to complement my build. For the price, these things seriously rock, even when driven by my weak laptop/tv output.

If it was me, i'd bump the GTS up to a 640mb OC version myself, but everything else looks good.

Hmm, well it's a little late to change now :). Eventually I may pick up a new card in another year. Probably to coincide with a new monitor.

Another plug for Ava's customer service. It's been a little more than a week since I've ordered and I've been impatiently refreshing Ava's webpage every hour ;). I just got an email from them explaining the building process and assuring me that everything was in order. I'm glad they took the effort (even if it's an automated email) to keep me updated.

Well, slight update. My computer hasn't shipped yet, I didn't get the details but I guess there must have been problems with the burn in. For anyone curious about lead times involved, I ordered and payed on the 04/17 and it will hopefully ship tomorrow 05/04, about two and a half weeks from ordering to shipping.

It's a little longer than I expected but if the system works well, then it will be all worth it.

Got the system, works great. Only problem now, is I can't seem to force 720p output. Hopefully I'll get it resolved soon, but so far it runs Gal Civ II and Civ4 flawlessly. I'll push it a little harder with Sup. Com.

Avadirect was very responsive to my messages, the system took longer than expected but it seems to run perfectly.
