Havent owned a ati card in a long time... I know nvidias numbering sche like gtx 580 5 is the series 8 is the grade (performance) 0 can be changed if they make something inbetween or they add diff set of initials to it...

However I cant figure out ati's.. I sorta get it but not completely.. Like one ending in 90 is the best of its class the 6 at the beginning is the series number... But what does the number inbetween corralte to? Im not buying one.. But like to be in the know

1 series/generation currently 6000 series
2 class 7/8/9 enthusiast 5/6 mainstream 3 entry
3 more granularity within class
4? don't think seen used

Its similar to the nvidia scheme. Using the 6970 you have the 6 for the series, the 9 is sortof the performance range (9-8 being enthusiast, 7-6 being more mainstream, 5-4 being entry-level, 3-2-1 being integrated APU), and the last 2 digits being the performance level within the range. Pretty straight-forward really- the higher the last 3 numbers, the faster the card. (don't do a direct number comparison between series though- those don't always end up as you'd expect)

6970

6 = Architecture and generation. All cards within the same generation have the same architecture. A 6000 card is NOT always faster than a 5000 card.
9 = Performance tier. This has changed a few times in the past, but right now it is: 9 = ultra high end, 8 = high end, 7 = mid range, 6 = mainstream, 5 = more mainstream, 4 = desktop discrete, 3 = integrated.
7 = Performance class. 70 is usually the highest, but the 6990 uses 90. The exact number doesn't necessarily mean anything, only if its higher than a card in the same tier (the 5870 is faster than the 5850 and 5830 because the numbers are higher, but we can't conclude anything else).
0 = never been used. For all intents and purposes, you could say "should I buy a 697?" if you want. You'll look like a clown, but ya can if ya want to. :p

Actually- all cards within the same generation do NOT necessarily have the same architecture. The 69xx vs. 68xx series are the perfect example of that- 69xx uses the VLIW4 arch. while the 68xx use VLIW5 from the 5xxx series.

Besides that, all cards in the same generation have the same internal architecture, same anisotropic filtering, same movie playback abilities (though not all will support them completely), same everything else.

Good catch, I forgot.

Thanks for the knowledge guys... Again I dont plan on getting anything currently... And I already knew card a is better than card b but card c is just as good... Lol just wanted to know exactly how theyre numbering worked.. And well now I know
