Hi guys I am about to buy an Athlon Mobile 2500 and Abit NF7-S motherboard off of someone on these forums. It is going to be fitted with this heatsink:

It is going to be run with 2X256 Dell pc3200 2.5-3-3-6 ram and a Antec 400 watt power supply. I plan on overclocking it obviously. The original owner said it got 250 stable bus on water cooling. I was thinking 12X200 at 1.75 volts. I am new to this, so any help would be appreciated. Also, how well will this setup perform. I currently have an Athlon 1800 with 512 pc2100.
 
was there an actual question in there, it's kind of hard to tell.

you say a lot of things, but what are you asking?

250 FSB on a NF7-S is wicked high. unusually so. if he had that good an OC with the pair of parts, then why is he selling them? for how much?

also, mating components that someone says OC really well, to blah ram...........what is your goal? are you looking for a reasonable performance, general use system, or somthing to OC with and use as a hobby?

that heatsink will let your processor get pretty darned hot, with the kind of speeds that you are thinking of running at.

you have a good PSU for running a normal system with, but not somthing with enough kick to go for a really good overclock.

if you cannot answer all of those questions, then please answer these two: what is your budget? is you goal performance, or is your goal to overclock?
 
200x12 should be pretty easy, i think you should invest in a better heatsink though

my friend had that 'sink on a t-bred 2600, running toally stock, and he usually ran up over 60 C.

i don't think that you will necessarily be able to get your target OC, without drastically shortening the life of your processor.

your budget makes this really tough, though.

that being said, with such loose ram timings, the CPU will not be your bottleneck, even at reduced speeds.

maybe go for 11 x 200, until you can get the other components needed to really OC that thing.

just for reference: going from 12.5 x 200 to 13 x 200 on my system results in about 0.5 FPS gain in doom3. your graphics card is more likely to govern your performance at CPU speeds above 2.2 GHz.

1. 12x200 at 1.75. you joking? i can do that exact speed on 1.600 vcore. yeah, thats right, 2500xpm power. i can do 12.5x200 on 1.725 prime stable, but i'm limited by cooling and noise. but the best oc so far for me was 11x227 on 1.725, but again, i'm not doing this for day-to-day use because of cooling and noise. If i had a wc setup, i could probably hit 2.6ghz with higher vcores.

2. his "250bus" depended on his ram. You can do even higher with super expensive ram, so ifyour dell ram are those cheap ones, forget about this fsb. mine right now is running at 222fsb, but on cheapo samsung pc3200 ram.

3. have fun with the oc, and always remember, OC THE FSB, NOT THE MULTI

4. oh btw good choice with the cheapo processor, cause for gaming really, the graphix card is the key. processors aren't that important at all, perhaps even ram is more important than processors.

1) well that depends on the individual core, not doesn't it? my 2600 mobile can't hit 11 x 200 without 1.70 volts.

i'm very glad that you lucked out with a golden chip, but this guy shoud not count on it, especially not with low-end air cooling.

2) NF7-S boards that can get above 235 are VERY rare, at least while keeping the ram at CL 2.0. if he got 250 with CL2.5, that's very nice. but it's not comparing apples to apples.

3) he still has not said whether or not he is targeting decent day-to-day performance, or an overclocking hobby. if he just wants to play counterstrike and chat with his friends, then what is the point of him working hard to up his FSB above stock?

just curious about your overclock, is it 838E chips on your samsung ram?, and what timings are you running them at ?
