I am trying to find out what is an acceptable temperature range to operate my E-350 at.

I currently have the Asus E35M1-I motherboard in a very small case with a two measly 40mm fans for pulling air out of the case. I also have a PCI-e Dual Intel Gb NIC and a 16GB SSD powered by a Pico PSU.

Currently the temps hover around 70C. I know that the chip is designed to operate up to 90C but just not sure if I should try and keep this cooler than it currently is.

I am open to just about any suggestion however if I need to get a new case then I will be looking for something as small as possible.

PS I took the case lid off and laid a 120mm fan over the heatsink and the temps have dropped to 47C

I was working on an Acer Aspire mITX machine with the same APU the other day. The temps were similar to what you are describing. I think the default power/fan profiles allow them to run rather warm. As long as it is staying below the max safe temp, I think you are probably OK. Personally, I would modify the chassis for more airflow like you have just because I prefer things cooler as well.

The Asus MB I have doesn't have a CPU fan so I'm at the mercy of those two small fans. However, this machine has been flawlessly operating for several months this way and I have no reason to expect anything less.

This MB was previously running as my FreeNAS machine in a much large chassis with significantly greater airflow.

The heatsink on that board looks like it would accommodate a small fan screwed-into the heatsink with standard self-tapping screws. 80mm or 60mm likely would do it, you might want to measure it if you don't have a bunch of fans lying around.

I do have all various sizes of fans laying around (who doesn't?) but I will have to measure the distance between the top of the heatsink and the case. Any recommendations on how close the fan can be to the case? A brief look on Newegg doesn't show many options for slim/skinny fans below 120 mm.

I think I can only fit a ~10mm fan on top of the CPU heatsink. I have a random 50x50x10mm fan laying on top right now and it seems to be dropping the temp by 10 degrees C. I just bought one of these to see if it will drop the temps more.
