AMD 939 socket....what is the fastest processor I can get?

Hi

I have a 939 socket with a 3400 amd processor, at 2.0 ghz

this--

AMD Sempron 3400+ / 2 GHz


so, what is the largest fastes processor I can put in there?

I am running ide drives now, but the mobo has connections for SATA

I am gonna put in those drives....and about 2 to 2.5 gig of memory

the mobo is an ASUS

but the system is a compaq

---do I have to change the processor, or can I just OC it?

I doubt you can OC with that Asus Compaq OEM motherboard. What model Compaq? or does the Asus board have a model # on it? (it should) We need this info before we can tell you what CPU you can upgrade to.

Also, what is your budget for this upgrade?
What do you hope to accomplish with this upgrade?
Have you changed anything else in the system so far? If so, what?
 
if the computer has the option for raid get several drives and raid them it will keep the cpu fed at 100 percent all the time makeing better use of your cpu. more ram isn't benficial after about 4gigs. the harddrives become the bottleneck on todays computers. if your using 2.5 gig of ram unless its lying around i would upgrade. this will also make everyday tasks faster. as far as gameing goes. get one with plenty of vram and fast ram and you can game at a higher resolution. this will make things faster on your older system. getting a faster proccesor for that system would cost as much as a e5200 i would upgrade.

But yea - As previously mentioned - let us know the MB make and model and what it is that you want to do with the system. :)
 
its probably asus made but its not supported by asus..

the fastest single core 939 is the athlon 64 4000+ and the fastest dual core 939 is the x2 4800+ but with that being a compaq i really doubt it would support a dual core processor..

edit.. i was wrong.. it does support up to the x2 4800+..

check and make sure this is the correct system surfbug.. but this is what compaq support search gave me..

Isn't the fastest 939 the FX-60? FX-62 is AM2. The motherboard is probably P/N 5188-2526 or 5188-2527. I think that is the board used in my HP media center with the 3500+. Is it Asus model A8M-VM or something like that?

Yah, but I doubt any official BIOS has OC'ing capabilities. Custom BIOSes may have such features, but they're hard to come by.
