Are all AMD socket 939 boards compatible with the new dual core CPU's with just a BIOS update? If not all, are most of them? Or do they have to be specifically designed to support the new dual core processors?

I'm interested in making a dual core X2 4800+ system, or possibly a dual processor system. I already have 2 Opteron 250's waiting to be used... but from what I've been reading it's probably more cost effective to sell those and get a socket 939 system.

They are supposed to be, many need at least a bios update, and, I think, some first gen boards don't play well with them but i could be wrong.

My MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum m/b works just fine w/the A64 4400+ x2, which I just upgraded to. I had been running the regular A64 3200+ for nearly a year w/the Windows XP Pro x64 Beta OS.

Before upgrading, I loaded the latest m/b BIOS from MSI.

All 939 boards are capable of X2 support. The only limitation is bios development. Some manufacturers are currently offering Beta bios for X2 support.

My first generation 939 (see sig) works great with an X2. Gigabytes X2 Bios support emerged back in July, well in advance of processor availability.

Almost. It should be noted that Via's original revision of K8T890 can't support an X2. Granted it didn't see very widespread use, but they are out there. (Abit AX8, Soltek SL-K890PRO-939, Albatron K8X890) Other than that, every 939 can take one with proper bios support.

If you already have the 250s then grab an Asus K8N-DL for $220 and pop them in. Down the line you will have the option for dual core dual cpu.
