AMD's next-generation GPUs have showed up in product tables for the first time.

Zoom"Oland" will be built in 28 nm, but feature a substantially larger die than the current Pitcairn core and promises a sizable performance increase. The price may be the big surprise in this release.

The transistor are size will jump by 27 percent to 270 mm2 and the transistor count for both the HD 8850 and HD 8870 will grow to 3.4 billion. The base clock will be lifted by 7 percent and 5 percent, respectively, to 925 MHz and 1050 MHz. The single-precision computing performance is promised to increase by 70 percent to 2.99 and 3.94 TFlops, while the double precision count is indicated as 187 and 246 GFlops. AMD was apparently able to contain the power consumption of the cards and shave off 15 watts on the high end to arrive at 160 watts.

The most interesting part in the leaked table, if the information is accurate, is certainly the pricing, which is much more aggressive than before. The higher-end 8870 is listed for $279, while the 8850 has a $199 MSRP. This information is not confirmed, but certainly intriguing and an interesting play for AMD.
 
Early rumors also suggested the 680 to be priced at $299. And we all know how that went.

Thats when it was called the 660. I think AMD knows it will be facing the 680 reborn as a 760 at around those price points now, so they have to beef up their offerings accordingly. I cant wait to see the 770 vs 8950 matchup.

Notice this is about the 8800 series, not the 8900 series. This would be the replacement for the 7870, not the 7970. It's very possible, likely even, that a 8870 would be slower than a 7970. If it's a 6-month lead they are going for, this won't be what gets them there.
 
Interesting strategy, well see how it plays out. They're already beating nvidia to the mid range so quickly, I wonder why they would release the midrange first?
 
Because midrange sells far more than highend parts.

7950 > 660ti and is roughly the same pricing at $300 (7950 seen for $280 recently)

$300 is really no longer mid range... and when you consider that 7950 is a high end card

also 7870 > 660 while again being cheaper, by ~$20?

lower end has been AMD 100% of the way as well..

I never said they were winning, but at least Nvidia is contesting that market space now (unlike 3 months ago).
