I have to get three quotes for a system and I happened to call a store in my town today and after mentioning that I wanted a 64 based system the asshat owner starts going on about how the 64s are having cooling problems and a long line of BS following that about how his vendors wont even sell it to him because of that and then tried to sell me a P4 3.2ee based system. Talk about shi11y customer service!

I want to bring in a side by side spec sheet, benchmark or something else showing the temps of the two procs. If someone knows of a good comparison please link it for me. I don't care about the other benchmarks, just the temps. Did I mention, this guy is an asshat?

This reminds me of the idiots at bestbuy who swear by intel yet no nothing about them more then "they are the shiznit"... :rolleyes:

a. I still need a heat comparison
b. I'm not going to begin an amd vs intel flame off. I have specific hardware needs and need 3 seperate quotes from businesses.

d. I don't intend to be an ass to him, I just want to know why a business owner would tell such obvious BS lies. If I take away the excuses, then what does he have? There are a lot of half ass computer techs/business owners out there *cough infinium labs* and people need to be informed of them.

With that said, I am not paying for the system, the VA is, and therefore I have to get quotes. my plea is still out for a temperature comparison.

Still doesn't answer your question, but I know one of the owners of a local shop, and intel pays him a hell of a lot of $$ to bash AMD in favor of intel, they don't even carry AMD. And I got about the same respose from him about AMD's (heat) but when asked about price he got quiet, and when I asked about 64 bit desktop computing, he told me go with an Itanium, cause they're "faster"
 
Truth be told TekieB, I work at a rival shop in town and have my hand in a couple of projects that by their nature have hurt his business :) but, He has no Idea who I am because I was anonymous over the phone for the quote, and the fact that he has never met me.

I have heard rumor of that practice by the big I, but have never run into it throughout all of my travels and going into hundreds of computer shops. I sell both and don't try to talk anyone out of their choice, I do try push the 64 if they are AMD inclined just for the simple fact of an attempt to future proof and be ready for Longhorn.

That owner I was talking to was trying to tell me that Longhorn was designed for the Prescotts. Now why else would someone say that a 64bit OS is being designed for a 32bit processor rather than the 64 if not for him being either A,. an ignoramous, or B. paid to say so? I want to take away his excuses with a heat comparison and then see what his excuse is. So please help me find a good benchmark on that...
 
I'd personally take the EE... I utterly hated the multitasking and office performance of my Athlon64 3200+. Maybe the motherboard and socket 754 cpu were a bit premature, but I went from a 2.4c @ 3ghz to the athlon 64 system and regretted it from day 1. I do a lot of webpage design and a little programming, so your mileage may vary depending on what you do but intel is what I prefer atm. Socket 939 with dual channel memory and newer tech may be better, but I'd steer clear of 754 if you're trying to get an a64 system.
 
check on the web for benchmarks and comparisions...

the P4EE is roughly tied with the AMD 64's in most comparisions but the P4EE costs WAY more. As far as heat goes:

p4 3.4EE = 102.9 Watts max power dissipation

All of the AMD-64 chips I could find have 89 Watts of max PD. Not much of a difference, a little more than 13%. Though, with AMD's Cool N Quiet, the chips tend to use less power when they are not @ full throttle.

So basically you have: the two chips have about the same performance. the intel is much more expensive, and makes appx %13 more heat.

Use google if you want to double check my findings if youd like.
 
Yumm P4 3.2EE is so sweet... (what pressie? this is diff core guys). But the cost is... too prohibitive for me. Hack, if I had money I might have gon EE route instead of A64 :p As for cooling, I dunno... as long as it is not uncontrollably hot, I am okay (pressie however is beating on that margin even with H2O) As for top dog A64 vs Intel Northwoods... they have about equal temp according to my exos block.... so I don't even worry about it anymore.
 
well, if your buddy the computer shop owner is getting $$$ from Intel, he must be asking for it...frankly, i get absolutely nothing from Intel (except free t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc.) and occasional spiffs.

It isn't money in the literal sense, it's just he gets major benifits for selling ONLY intel and nothing else. (he claims he gets them real cheap, etc)
 
He is straight wrong, but I will say the athlon 64's run really god damn hot in Windows XP 64 bit edition. In 64 bit edition the chip is used to it's fullest and my idle temps jumped from 41.1 C to 50.7 C, that is a huge difference in temps, but nothing to stop retailers from carrying them. Then again, that's why you really should do your own research and only ask people at stores if something is in stock.

Thanks for the heat link. The Wattage listing tends to favor the amd line by 13% which would definitely discredit the asshats claims of the amd having "overheating issues" a blatant and obvious lie, right up there with claiming that Longhorn is being developed for a 32 bit platform.

if its idling how is all the functionality being used? your observation is probably faulty.
is Cool N Quiet working installed and working correctly? Could there be other problems?
CPU Idle temp should not be changed by the the fact the OS is 64 bit....full throttle *maybe* but even then I doubt it. what are you using to monitor temps?
