AMD 64 on a budget

First I’d like to thank everyone here. It’s great to find a place where everyone is so willing to help each other. So with that said.

Here is my problem. I’m looking at building a computer to take everywhere with me.

This is what I have
2x Hitachi 7K250 250GB
2x 512 Kingston HyperX ULL PC3200
Pioneer DL dvd drive

What I plan on getting
Shuttle Sn25p
BFG GeForce 7800 OC
Plextor PX-716SA
TV tuner card (don’t know which one)
AMD 64.....
And this is what I’m needing help with.

I’ve read a decent amount about the new 939 pin chips.
I heard a lot of people say that the new Venice core is the best.
What I needing to know is...
Is the Venice better than the Winchester.
And in that series,which gets you the most performance for the money?

I’m looking to spend less than $270 for the proc.
Any advice would be helpful.

The computer will be exposed to some hot temps. (the desert isn't exactly cold)
 
Clock for clock, I don't think that there is much difference between the different cores. If you want to OC, then try to get an A64 with a Venice core (Somebody correct me if I am wrong here, I haven't exactly studied the subject throughly.). I would suggest an A64 3500 oem since that SNP25 will have its own cpu cooling system; you just need the chip itself. Hey, there is no use to pay for a heatsink that you don't need.

I believe the venice and SanDiego cores run cooler than the previous designs, which is why they are such popular overclockers. In your case, with a cramped case like you are wanting to use, a cooler running processor is definately a good thing, as airflow will not be very good. I would go with a venice,... actually I did go venice ;)
 
You won't be able to put a tv tuner AND the 7800gtx in the sn25p. The heatsink covers the 1x pci-e slot.

I was with the understanding that the BFG version of the 7800 card was a single slot card. I didn't think that it would restrict the use of the PCI-E 1x slot (I've been trying, with no luck, to find a picture of the layout of the FN25... the motherboard that the SN25P uses).

no it doesnt, the cooler on the 7800gtx is single slot. your 6800ultra is dual slot, you jealous SOB ;)

aanyways. iirc winchester actually runs a little cooler than venice at stock, but venice has lower power consumption meaning you can crank up the voltage and get nice a nice oc.

Okay okay. Then show me this... a tv tuner that uses a pci-e 1x interface?? :)
 
Yeah, the tv tuner is the wrench in the gears. I'm going to have to wait to get the tuner card. But I'll be tearing up battlefield 2 untill one is released. (I was going to post the tuner card on a diferent string)

So, I guess I should get the 3500+ Venice
I'll have to wait untill my next pay check to get it and the Video card.

uh 1 gb ram?

i heard bf2 is a ram hog even w a 7800gtx and a good proc

u mite want 2 think about gettin another gig if you are going 2 play bf2

Think about it. Next year, when they come out with the Geforce 8 line, you'll be able to upgrade to that. :) You'll already have an up-to-date CPU.

\EDIT: I just noticed ZipZoomFly has the X2 for $4 less but you need to spend $10 more for the 6800 GT although it's an XFX. So, buy that combo if you prefer ZZF and XFX and it's only $6 more. (I don't know how the shipping would vary though.)

That sounds like a good suggestion but the 6800GT linked is an AGP one. No go in the shuttle.

Hopefully by the time you have the funds to buy the system, AMD will have lower prices. Come on 3800+ X2 :D

Yeah, when that new, cheaper dual core comes out next month I guess that CPU & the eVGA 6800 (non-GT) $189 (may be AGP though) will be the best bang for you buck combo.

Im running it at 1600x1200, 4xaa, and all settings max on my AMD system in sig.
 
I wasn't even sure that the SN25p could handle the X2 chips. (I'm still trying to figure out if the motherboard will handle a SATA DVD burner). If anyone has any experence with the X2 chip, Could you tell me if you think that it would be a problem?
