I have been looking into this proccessor and I dont quiet get something. If this proccesor is supposed to be AMD's best proccesor which does it say it operates only at a 2.4ghz clock?

Does my intel p4 2.8E right now beat that?, what am i missing or just not understanding totaly/

Ghz cannot be compared between different CPU lineups. The Athlon 64 is faster because: shorter pipeline (does more work per cycle and less branch misprediction), and it has an onboard memory controller that greatly reduced latencies associated with traditional memory controllers. I dont think there's much argument that the FX-53 is the fastest x86 cpu on the planet. Your P4 is signifigantly slower in games then the FX, as the P4's long pipeline really hurts gaming performance.

can't a cpu only carry out one calculation per clock cycle. It doesn't do more per clock just does them faster due to the shorter pipeline right?

A CPU can do many instructions per clock cycle, you can't really give it a number because it depends on the complexity of the calculations, but just let it suffice to say that AMD does MORE.

The AMD64 also has other features that put it ahead, like the integrated memory controller, which takes the northbridge out from between the CPU and the RAM.

FX-53 ~ P4 3.8 GHz

think of it this way:

you have a 20 stones that must be carried from one area to another
you can have either:
A) one strong guy who can carry two blocks at once
or
B) two guys who carry one block each

all 3 walk at the same speed

AMD is A and intel is B

amd has a higher IPC

Nah, that ain't it.

A64 HyperThreading is inherent, fragment processing performed by the CPU for more per cycle without exposing to programmers.

P4 is broken, the processors could not use all internal resources properly for full efficiency forcing Intel to expose it to programmers to finish the job. Unfortunately, if it isn't easy for Intel hardware engineers to fully utilise all internal hardware resources transparently, it is no walk in the park for programmers.

eg, it is useful only in narrow specific conditions at other times it is a penalty if activated full time on. Most programmers can't even use 2 full CPUs properly much less multiple fractional processors.

have you even looked at any AMD chips made in the last 2 years? :p

Yes, I have multiple current and had used many AMD controllers in my designs since the early '80.

...
i was trying to make a simple explanation for the guy on why "slower" AMD chips are as fast as "faster" intels...
