OK, Ive just been getting back into the computer scene again. And let me tell you, I was not keeping up to date since last July, and its amazing how much new stuff is out. I'm not jokeing, just to get well oriented again it will probably take well over 15 hours of reading and reviewing all the different products etc.

I'm going to be upgrading my system this August when I get back to USA. But from what I determined the best deal now for a 64 big processor is the AMD 64 right?

ALso is it advisiable to upgrade to a 64big processor for my next upgrade in August?

Is it a must to get a PCI express video card if I'm going to be doing a complete system upgrade in August?

Welcome back into the fold, friend. I, too, just recently got back into the hardware scene after a long absence (longer than yours by a couple years, even).

Yes, AMD chips are by far the best 64 bit chips out there. PCI-Express is not necessary, but it is a good idea. AGP slots on new motherboards are becoming more rare, and will just continue to be harder to find. PCI-Express is the future, AGP is the past.

If you're going to upgrade any time in the near future, AMD 64's are the way to go. The only reason I see to get an Intel processor is if you often do processor intensive tasks in the background (stuff like ripping CDs, processing video, etc). Even then, it would need to be something you do often enough for it to be a major pain if your computer slows down during those things.

Long story short.

AMD has the best performing chips now.
AGP is for all intensive purposes dead. Don't buy anything AGP if you want to upgrade down the line.

I should put this in my sig:

AMD= Gaming
Intel=heavy multitasking

Overall: AMD

AGP: Waste of MORE money
PCI-E: Planning ahead and at a cheaper $

Well if 64bit is your primary concern, then the AMD64 will most certainly be the best thing for you. Intel's are for users who aren't as interested in using their computer pimarily for gaming. AMD's are powerhouses though, so if you're looking for something that will push benchmarks and perform better all-around, the AMD is your way to go. AMD processors are the best out there. The "deal" aspect... Not so much. People make them sound cheaper than they are. Although in consideration to the price/performance ratio depending on the user, the AMD is a better deal.

Whats the deal with the 64 bit app. speed in comparison with the barton XP I have in my sig.

For example, An athlon 64 3500 is only running at 2.2 gig.
Does this mean when running 32 big apps, that my computer will be not so much faster than my processor now?

The answer is no. It will still be significantly more fast.

Reasons:
Bandwidth, the new a64 processors have 5x hypertransport lanes supporting 5 times more bandwidth than the axp (not to mention that the ram usage is just like this as well)
More Optimizations: Things like SSE, SSE2, and now even SSE3 are just the beginning here
Onboard memory controller: North bridge is just a thing of the past, now the processor can access the RAM and do requests without the need to ask for it from a northbridge.

You could actually get a processor clocked lower than your current AXP and still have it be faster (provided same amount of ram, video card etc)
