Hi all. I've searched for the answer to this question but really never got a definitive answer for the AMD64.

I've got an eMachines m6805 laptop that decided to no longer work, and was looking to pull the processor from it and use it in a desktop PC. Would this be possible? I've seen people post saying they've used non-64 Athlon-M processors in desktop environments, so I'm hoping it's a yes ...

If it is possible, what motherboard should I look into getting? I would like OC capability if it's possible, but it's not necessary -- just looking for something so my laptop isn't a useless paperweight

Thanks for any and all advice!!

Yep it should go right over with no problems, if you have the right motherboard. If you want a good O/Cing motherboard go with DFi NF3-250. It's pretty much unmatched on the Socket 754 platform.

Hmm...well, I tried installing the Athlon64-M on an Asus K8S-MX motherboard, and it didn't work. The CPU fan spun, I was able to get a BIOS screen, however it did not detect the processor.

The system would turn itself off after going through POST/Bios screens, or if they didn't come up, it would turn itself off in about ~10 seconds.

Anybody have any idea if this board is compatible with the A64M processor? I'm really frustrated at this point...The only other thing I can think of is that the processor is shot - Any other way I can confirm this besides trying boards until I find one that works? Thanks all!

:(

Alrighty...I just ordered that Chaintech motherboard from Newegg - hopefully that will be my solution.

In that I'm getting spinning fans and I'm at least able to see the POST, is there still the possibility of my CPU still being OK, or there's no telling until I use a confirmed board?

Thanks for your advice!

Seeing it POST is a good sign. Since it's probable that the BIOS can't detect what kind of cpu it is to set up the proper multiplier, fsb, and whatnot to run correctly is probably why it's shutting down. Just a guess, but seems to fit. Maybe?

Sounds like good news to me!! :) Any time I've ever had a processor failure, I've gotten nothing out of the mobo...just a few fan stutters.

Also with the DTR processors, in reading around I've seen a few issues with people worried abuot heatsinks not properly covering the die. Is this going to be an issue where I'll need to obtain a shim? I've got a Foxconn CMA-K8-2B heatsink/fan combo and some Arcticsilver compound to use on it -- should that be sufficient or will I need another heatsink combo?

Also what I should've mentioned earlier (I was too pissed about my laptop crapping out on me) is that the processor is an AMD64 Clawhammer 3000+ , if that has any bearing on anything... And as another note, I'm using 2x512 Corsair Valuselect VS512MD400 for a total of 1 gig.

Here's a link to a picture of the processor for those who care... Thanks again all!

:) I got the processor working on the Chaintech board. THANKS! The processor temp when I checked it was 34deg C -- Is that within acceptable range for the processor? Also, anybody have any idea why WindowsXP reports it as being 803mhz  -- Thanks again!

Turn off cool and quiet ... that should fix that. Also set the power management to something other than minimal

34 degrees Celsius is a pretty standard idle temp. Around 50C load is normal and is probably what you'll get.

What does CPU-Z, or anything else for that matter, report the CPU speed at? If windows reports 800mhz then it probably is. It could be Cool'n'Quiet in action. Set your CPU settings manually in the BIOS (and overclock it too).

edit: Also, check the CPU speed while at 100% load. See if it changes.

Alright...I change the vcore to 1.45 and the multiplier to 9x and cpuz is reporting it at 1800 mhz now...NICE! Now, I've got to learn how to overclock it :)

Also, what should my HTT speed be? Its currently 201.0 mhz...

201 MHz is normal. For overclocking, use the HTT multiplier in BIOS to keep it at or under 1000MHz as much as possible when increasing your fsb.
