What is the actual difference between Tyan K8WE and the 4x4 platform? They seem to be very similar..both multisocket and SLI capable..

The biggest difference is that one is available and the other isn't :p

I imagine there will be a lot of differences though as the k8we is still built more for workstations. I don't forsee 4x4 (worst name ever) mobo's having pci-x.

Attempting comparisons at this point is severely premature.
You're talking 16 cores versus max 4. The only thing that would directly compare in core count is the Iwill H8502. And not enough is known about the 4x4 (besides the fact that it's a product desperately seeking a market.)

More OC options on the 4x4 platform I bet. I can overclock my K8WE but I don't have the motherboard based OC options like most mainstream boards.

4x4 will use unregistered, non-ECC RAM.

That is unlikely in the extreme. Making a CPU that uses the physical socket 1207 but using unregistered RAM will create a platform entirely incompatible to Socket F. No exchanges of CPUs with Socket F. That won't fly. Also, you cannot use the same boards are the wiring for the RAM sockets is different and the registered platform can have more RAM sockets.

Get used to it. The AM2 based 4x4 failed, probably becauuse they didn't find board makers. Now AMD rebased 4x4 to Socket F to not admit defeat. It'll use normal socket F mainboards and that means registered DDR2 RAM. In practice that also means ECC since so far nobody offered non-ECC registered RAM.

The speed difference both from registered and from ECC is neglible, but of course both hurt memory overclocks.

uOpt has a good point though - if they did 4x4 using socket F but no ECC RAM, you've basically got a third platform, that pretty much nobody is going to buy.

So has there been anything official from AMD about this? I haven't been following 4x4 too much because it always seemed like a product searching for a market.

It maybe possible that they found a way to use certain non-registered ram chips with Socket F. I know that my AMD-KG7 (though not a dually board) has the the AMD 760 chipset which can handle either four registered DDR dimms or two unregistered DDR dimms. The kicker was that Abit found a way to run the chipset out of spec (unofficially of course) where if one had the right brand of four unregistered DDR dimms they would actually work. It may be possible that AMD has found the same work-around for the 4x4 platform that given the right memory chips, no register is needed at the cost of a bit of stability loss where the platform is no longer acceptable for enterprise/workstation market but more than good enough for the enthusiast market which will push it further into the "unstable" region.

No, just widely discussed reports that 4x4 is being rebased to socket 1207.

Maybe they had changed to 1207 when no mainboard vendor for dual AM2 showed up but now they have found an idio^H^H^H brave vendor?

The board in the picture also looks like standard ATX format (which will make good air colling impossible).
