Hello all,

Just got my last pieces in, spent forever routing the cables, lots of air cooling, and now gonna risk it all by embarking on my 1st OC'ing of a proc. Just dropped more than I wanted into my rig. Specs are :

Amd 3800 x2 // Biostar 6100 939 mobo // Zalman 120mm hsf // 120mm intake,exhaust fans // raptor 10k 74gig sata // xfx 7800 gtx // corsair xms 2gig pc3200 CL 2 // Audigy 2zs plat (had that from last cpu build). I believe that is all the important stuff.

Question is, anyone had a similar setup? What is a good stable OC that I can expect from this? Hoping to keep the rig for 3-5 years! And for your pros out there, is this a pretty good setup? :) Fishing for compliments. Anyhow, i'll post it and read any info you guys can share. Thanks a lot!

Good rig, what PSU, and only 74GB HDD space? No idea what OCability that mobo has.
 
Crap I knew I was forgetting something. The PSU is an Antec Neopower 480w. A 74gig HDD, becauseg this cpu will be use mainly for gaming and mp3 playing (cause game music sucks)! 74gig is plenty, I was hoping! :)
I troll a few forums, but I rarely post much cause I'm not an authority on cpu's by any stretch of the imagination. However, the board is built for over-clockers from what I have read. I would really like to get 2.4 out of my rig. No idea if that is a stretch for a 1st timer (in OC'ing) or not. But I hear the 3800's OC very well. Long as I got a good chip!

I wouldn't get a Biostar mobo, they are really not the best choice at all. I would go DFI or MSI . Those remain my top favorites for the S939 series. DFI is the best OCer imo Good choice on the PSU, my buddy gots one and he swears by it. I myslef am going to be purchasing one soon. And really 74GB is not enough. I only have an 80GB HDD and I'm outta room now, I cant get 24 season 3 & 4 on my computer now :(
 
whats your reasoning for choosing the biostar? are u putting this into an matx case, like the qpack? cuz the biostar's a matx board, and the only point in getting one is if you're using a matx case.

Went with the mATX because I like having a ton of room in my case. I'm a very tedious neat freak. I have been obsessed with making sure there is tons of room, with tons of air flow. To my knowledge there aren't any extensive draw backs to the mATX...perhaps you can enlighten me.
Also, i went with biostar because I have heard good things about it. And there is even an auto OC feature that will OC it at 10% - 20% - 30%. For instance there is the amd x2 3800 runs at 2.0 ghz stock. With the 30% OC I have seen where people have had it running at 2.6 stable. Anyhow only set me back for $75. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I got 2.4ghz no problem from my Biostar ideq330p and x2 3800, no idea how that compares to your board but it's also an SFF with stock cooling.
 
Overclocking can be risky to your components if you make a mistake or don't know what you are doing. The system should run great at stock, you should read A LOT before OCing. You stated that you can't afford parts if somethings breaks, and you want to keep it for 3 to 5 years. OCing also shortens the life of the equipment.

With that said, you should be able to get 2.2 GHz without trying and 2.4 if you work at it.
 
Yeah. I would think 2.4 would be just fine for me. But I plan to take it extremely slow, and trust me, I have been reading all the guides over and over for about month and a half now (time to get all my parts in)! Sorry if I gave off the impression that this was my first computer build or that I am new to computers. I have a little experience in them, 5th construction of a cpu, but completely new to the procedure of OC'ing. Not the effects, pros, cons, yadda yadda yadda. I tend to think a cpu (life not whether it's dated or not) should go for about 6-8 years if properly maintained w/o OC'ing. But with OC'ing 3-5 years would be great. I know quad core is on the horizon and will for sure be here by 2008, so if I only get 3 years out of it, no big deal.
I could have dropped a few hundred bucks extra and got one of the bigger X2's if I just wanted a screaming cpu. But I'm one of those guys who loves to learn, and I'm very excited about the idea of getting more out of my cpu than the avg. joe. So gaming, bragging rights, great performace, and the thrill of "souping" , "hot rodding" it up is what I'm after. :D
