AMD 3700+ CPU INFO

I was looking at getting the AMD64 3700+ CPU but am having a problem finding out if DFI or MSI support it. What motherboards are anyone out there using that might have this CPU?

Also, is this classified as a San Diego core?
 
are you looking at the s754 3700+ or s939 3700+

s939 3700+:
2.2ghz
1mb cache
san diego core
dual channel

s754 3700+
2.4ghz
1mb cache
clawhammer core (newark for the true mobile)
single channel


just about any s939 board should support the first one, and any s754 board should support the second one
 
DFI nF4 Ultra-D supports it fine with the BIOS it's shipped with - although you should still flash with the 3/10 right away for other reasons. MSI will with a BIOS update and should work to some extent without.

The DFI nF4 Ultra-D is the best overclocking mobo for socket 939...BUT if you already have a good AGP card, just get the MSI nF3 Neo2 and save yourself the expense of a new vid card. DFI will have a similar offering out any time now (note any time now, not any day now) if you're not building this right away.

There is more than one chip with that number, so make sure you get one that says San Diego. Or Rev. E. Something that'd indicate it's a San Diego 3700+ instead of a Clawhammer. ^_^

Good choice of CPU though. Got the rest of your system sorted out yet?
 
I was thinking the 3700+ (939 Rev E) with the DFI nF4-DR SLI board, a pair of 6800GTs or Ultras and some good memory - still looking for that (thinking OCZ Plat).

OCZ plat is good, but Ballistix or TwinMOS SP would be better as they have tighter timings than TCCD at decent speeds.

Exact procedure varies by manufacturer & BIOS type. Frequently there'll be several download choices for a given BIOS release. For example, a program that automatically makes a boot floppy for you, or download the flash program & BIOS image and make your own boot disk, or have a Windows-based flash utility & BIOS image.

The boot floppy is the best choice, especially if they release a program that automatically creates the disk from a blank floppy. Flashing from within Windows can be a bit iffy.

Regardless, the manufacturer's support/download page will have detailed instructions.
 
you don't really need to get anything. i have some pc3200 ballistix that will do 255mhz without too much of a problem, not that overclocking ram really neans anything to an a64.
if you find the ram tops out before the cpu does, just drop the memory divider ;)

This is true. You're not going to find a gigantic difference OC'ing the memory of an A64, especially a dual-channel enabled one. One thing you should try to do though, is to tweak the timings and speed of the memory to get your write speed as high as possible, though, unless you're running on a 1mb cache CPU.

The 3700+ has the 1mb cache right? Why would that be different, in the above statement, over a standard CPU?
 
more cache means that it's slightly less dependant on the low latencies of the memory controller ;)

How does one go about increasing write speed? I noticed on my setup, the write speed is slower compared to similar systems using everest memory tests...
 
tighter timings, faster ram clock and faster cpu clock are three good ways of going about that :p

Actually what timing settings adjust memory write speeds?
 
my friends used to make fun of me all the time for stating the obvious. hahaha :p

all the the timings make a difference in write speed, but here are the more significant factors:
cas
trcd
trp
trrd
twr
trtw

most boards only let you change the first 3. and an important note about the last three.. lower isn't always better. i have found cases where i find better results with a medium setting than a lower or higher one.

Allow me to add the “obvious” to the above. Never ever try to flash a bios with your machine while it’s in an over clocked state!!!!!!

That may sound like I’m stating the ridiculous, but you wouldn’t believe the number of people who try it.

Doh. Shoulda mentioned that.

You can usually just use the reset defaults option in the BIOS. Sometimes when you flash something, the old settings do screwy shit under the new BIOS version. Plus if it's not absolutely completely stable, and it puts a few bits in the wrong places, it's gonna really suck.

When you choose memory, how do you know what values can be changed? When I look at the OCZ Plat or other memory, I can see CAS and some other options (i.e. 2-2-2-5 / 2-2-2-6 / 3-3-3-6 / etc).. Is it the lower the better?
 
And as far as information, check out my sig and Robberbaron's for some results. The latency results on this stuff are sick, especially once you give it some decent voltage.
