my cpu makes a noise like saran wrap being rubbed together, just wanted to make sure if this was normal or not
 
it doesn't. capacitors can make noise though, which would indicate a bad board.
if the noise is coming from near the cpu, try placing your finger on various capacitors nearby and see if that stops the noise. if nothing changes, it could be one of the loops with wire around it in the power conditioning circuit... do the same to those.
if still nothing, look elsewhere for the sounds.
if it is one of the caps or metal loops, the board *may* be defective
 
its weird, when i shutdown it makes the same noise, and when i start tribes 2 it really starts making the noise.. i tried touching the capacitors and it didnt change anything..

and as soon as i alt+tab out of tribes 2 it stops, and im practically putting my entire head in the case and it sounds like its coming from the cpu
 
do any other programs cause the noise? try something like prime95 ;)
and cpu's shouldn't make noise.. i've seen one other incident of this happenening and it was solved by rma'ing the chip
 
nah the only program that consistently makes the noise is tribes 2, but sometimes it randomly makes the noise with other programs..

also the noise isnt very loud and i just built this computer about 5 days ago and ive had it on almost the entire time and ive had no bsod or crashes

is there some type of motherboard diagnostic program that could tell me if somethings wrong?
 
now i think it might be the video card, i took it out then started the computer and no noise
 
try another video card if you have one.. or borrow one from a friend or something and test it out
 
Sounds like you are pinning it down to video card, but just in case, be careful it is not PSU too.
 
could this even be a real problem though, could it be normal

because everything seems to be running perfectly fine, i get like 60-80 fps in ut2004, 150 fps in counter strike source, with highest settings at 1028x768 resolution

i have amd 64 3500+, chaintech nforce4 ultra, chaintech 6600gt pci-e, seagate sata2 w/ ncq harddrive, and corsair value select ram ( i need more )
 
would it hurt anything if i took out the video card while the computer is running?
 
yeah, video cards are not hot swappable. you'll fry something as you pull it out
and it's definitly a problem that something's making weird noise. it's not the gpu fan as it spins up, is it?
 
I would possibly blame the fan on the GPU (videocard) because it spins up when games load...alot of fans have a 2D idle spin, whereas when 3D kicks in, the fan spins to keep temps under control.
 
after looking at the reviews on the chaintech 6600gt on newegg.com i saw a few posts about the fan not being lubricated properly, how could i fix this
 
HOLD IT!

Guys, that noise is coming from the ferrite chokes on your motherboards and/or power supplies (Those little rings with the copper windings though'em). The cheaper types contain fine ferrite granules that absorbs any noise in the winding through magnetic induction, and in the process they vibrate, that's where that high-pitched squealing sound (like ants chittering, I always think) comes from. As the current draw (and thus magnetic field oscillations) is increased during load, you will usually find the noise gets louder.

Other types of chokes have a solid ferrite core and are silent, but are generally more expensive to manufacture.

Sometimes the noise can be reduced by stuffing a blob of silicone in and on the offending chokes.

but since says the sound is coming from the video card, might as well try another one just to see if it's causing the problem.

Ah, of course, I missed that. But I would like to point out that squeaking granular toroids are absolutely normal, it's a byproduct of their operation, and in no way indicative of a bad board.

It is pretty damn irritating, though. I had a PSU once that drove me insane until I ripped it open and replaced the chokes with solid ones. Lol....well, they were useful...when the noise stopped I knew my prime95 torture test had failed. :D :D :D
